Just used the app to book an Avis car in the UK for a week early next year.

After having hit the ‘Enter’ button, a pop-up appeared saying that I may be charged an FTP fee. This is apparently a Frequent Traveller Programme fee. My Avis account is linked to my BAEC account.

There’s limited info online and the FlyerTalk discussion goes back to 2012. It seems to suggest it’s a US thing, a hotel programme thing and confined to pre-paid bookings.

Anyone have any more recent experience. More than happy to cancel and re-book with another brand of car hire if necessary. Not really prepared to pay just to link accounts and get the Avios

It has always been there but not easily identifiable on the website. all the majors do it i believe.
I found out about the first time i booked a rental in germany when i was told when i arrived that having my AA number in the booking would add a certain amount to the total. After that I checked my rentals which were mostly Avis and it was the same everywhere.

I had Avis in Switzerland and UK recently, credited to Alaska MP and BA ( Avis Preferred) and didn’t get any pop-up or extra charge as far as I recall.

But I bet you still paid a surcharge.
Not that I’m aware of. Recent rentals in US and several now in Portugal/Spain. I’ve never seen this on AVIS.

"you may be subject to a frequent flyer surcharge or excise tax if you earn airline miles or hotel points instead of Avis Preferred points. This generally costs $1.50 per rental day. To change your rewards preferences from Avis Preferred points to the loyalty program of your choice, log into your Avis Preferred account, go to your profile homepage, click "rewards," and then "edit."

You mightn't see it but it is there.

It’s not. Maybe the key word is “may”. Possibly my corp rate AWDs don’t trigger it?

99% of my rentals (~doz per year) in Oz and OS are with AVIS and I’ve not seen the alert nor a line item for FTP.
