Off to AKL on a cheap LAN J fare status run/long weekend tomorrow and just saw on the Avis NZ website deals section that they have relocation specials from either Auckland or Christchurch airports to CBD locations. 19 New Zealand Pesos for 24 hours with enough free km to get into town and petrol thrown in for free. Vehicle groups A, B and C.

The only problem is that when I try to book it using the rate code "V2" as instucted by the ad, it comes up at over $100. It's a hassle to try to ring the NZ booking line, so I think I'll just front up to the counter at the airport without a booking and ask. If no, simply grab a cab, no great loss (apart from a cab being at least $30 more expensive...)

Has anyone actually successfully scored this deal?

Great deal.

A few years ago there was a similar deal from Christchurch-Picton for ~NZD20/day with 200kms. The only condition was 2 days to get to Picton which was more than enough time. I booked over the phone but cannot remember if I called Avis New Zealand or Avis Australia. Got QFF points as well.

A few years ago the taxi from/to airport was ~NZD60. I have since either used the shuttle or hired a car at ~NZD50/day to get from/to airport.

Airport One-Way Red Hot Deal

I've used this twice in Dec 2009. Once from the airport, and once I took an airbus out, and returned it to town. There are blackout dates, so we couldn't use it Dec 2010.

You only get 30km, and extra km are 25c/km.

Other good cheap relocation deals are often on:
grabaseat: Something went wrong - Air NZ
Rental Relocations Australia New Zealand United States Canada - Hire Now at StandByCars
Free Relocation Rental Cars and Campervans in NZ - Transfercar

Relocations are often South to North, but can be the other way before peak ski season, etc.

An update on this: I went to the Avis counter upon arrival at AKL. The chap there tapped something into his computer said that they didn't have "any more" cars that needed relocating to the CBD that day. A shame really, because the cab ended up costing >$80

No skybus? How much would a 1 day car hire cost?

I see handing money over to a taxi driver as a total waste of money....

especially at AKL - you may get billed twice :evil:

Sitting on a bus, then lugging suitcases up and down hills in the Auckland CBD seemed like too much hassle at the time. Previously I'd read that a cab to the city should be $50-$60. I know better for next time.

Standard 1 day car rental at walk up rates was over $100, so small consolation that the cab was marginally cheaper than that!

Next time, try asking if the Domestic Terminal needs any cars relocated back.
