Never booked a VA reward before, but my daughter needs to go SYD - HKG - SYD on 07 May - 14 May. In J / PE the points VA required is 810100.

Seriously? Am I misreading that, it is 810K? And it's via SIN.

I tried QF, SQ, and AA as well out of desperation. But nothing.

What you are seeing is points plus pay ...it mrans there are no Business rewards available on the flight.

That's not a reward booking :) That's what Virgin call Points plus Pay - it's basically paying a full fare in cash, converted into points at the rate of like $0.000007 per point or something stupid like that. (please don't do the math I didn't, I just made that number up... but it's REALLY bad value!)

If you want an actual reward booking, the column heading will have the word reward in it... but you won't find one of those now! You need to book them a year in advance, they're rare as hens teeth! I find if I am absolutely stringent on dates I book as soon as they become available, or if I am flexible there is often availability right at the last minute. EG I look AU-US mostly on Virgin international and I can get to LAX on a J reward seat tomorrow no problem, for 94k points (or 110k points if I don't want to pay cash for the taxes)

Thanks for that info. Currently looking at Y+PE on CX via QF points - it's the best I can find.

For SYD to HKG, the only option is via SIN on SQ, at least with the VA partners that there are there. You could also go NZ via AKL, though I'd reckon that's even more rare.

Have you possibly tried checking on the SQ KF website to see if there is any availability if you booked from there? i.e. look for SQ flights SYD-HKG via SIN? If there is availability there but not on the Velocity website, then you could consider sweeping across your VA points to SQ KF and redeem it that way. SQ KF do charge for the fuel unlike a redemption via VA, but it is an option.

Slightly off the beaten track, but have you also considered stumping up for the fare in cash?

Re: Announcing our New Velocity Frequent Flyer Program

Yes, thanks, tried QF, SQ, VA and AA. I have had to book a QF/CX Y and PE - that's the best we could get her. She dithered and availability kept changing for the worse.

She's a delicate flower and always wants to go direct :). Yes, checked cash fare and decided this way was OK. Pity she has no lounge access and a bronze.

And spoilt? What's wrong with economy?

Nothing, as long as it only last about 4 hours....

Personally I am more than content to use 50-100% more points for J for longer flights.
