Award flights SYD - Central America ?

My daughter wants to visit Central America mid March -April 2012. She has asked me to try and find award flights (first or business class) using her US Air miles (but if necessary I could use my AA miles).

I have never been to Central America so would appreciate any suggestions on best routing from Sydney to Central America for award flights and places to visit or avoid.

Where abouts in Central America?? Is she just talking Mexico (not that it sounds the safest place over most of the country) or all those little countries like Belize etc??

All the little countries!

She is travelling with her boyfriend. He has travelled a lot in South America and she has travelled in Asia and Europe but neither have been to Central America. They have just managed to get 6 weeks leave approved and want to see as much as possible. I just want them to visit the least dangerous countries!
