Random though I've had over the years.

Why is it that Australia has great pork bacon but the rest of the world has cough pork bacon. (Assuming they have pork bacon at all!)

Is it the Cut? Rib bacon here is quite "wide"

End random rant :)

This thread has convinced me that the BLT will do nicely for dinner tonight. :D

The nicest tasting bacon I've ever had was in Taunton, England a few years ago. :)

The next best bacon is from our local butcher in Aldgate, here in the Adelaide Hills. He cures his own and gets a perfect combination of salty and maple flavours..... yum!

(Bacon is meat candy!)

Agreed, everything is better with bacon.

However for any budding bacon aficionados, don't order the bacon salt from usafoods.com - tastes really REALLY strange, in a chemically weird way.

The F Lounge in Sydney has very nice bacon.

I disagree. It's too thin and most times not cooked through (yep I like bacon well cooked, not all soft and 1/2 cooked).

IMHO quality bacon is about twice as thick as the regular supermarket stuff.

Just love that bacon...Specially the AU variety!

Also had quality bacon in the U.K. and South Africa as they use the same cut as we do...in the U.S. They do not have the eye filet part just the streaky part and it is cough.

Not sure of the reason for this...any butchers out there?

Ahh the soggy v crispy bacon debate!!!

Soggy bacon wins hands down!

I think saying that Australia is the only country with good bacon is like saying that Australia is the only country with good wine, good seafood or good weather.

Personally I prefer a Somerset dry cure bacon to any bacon I have had here.

I loathe American bacon but I do rate it highly above beef bacon that I had in JED...

I got used to UK bacon when I was over there, and found it ok in the end. Definitely prefer Aussie bacon though.

I think the taste difference is partially what is fed to pigs, how the bacon is cut and how it is cured. Need a butcher to chime in though.

It is mostly about the curing. The mass produced bacon in the UK has water/brine injected into it so when you cook it, the brine leaks out leaving a white milky residue in the pan. That is the benefit of the dry cure.

I used to work for the company that produced 40% of the UK's bacon and only at bacon from one plant in the Group ;)

Love the hot bacon butties in the BA lounge LHR T5, just the job after an overnight flight from Oz. My son also loves them, says they taste better than Australian bacon.:)

American bacon and cheese are both strangely poor in quality.
Especially when they deep fry it!

At least here in Singapore I can easily get pork bacon at the hotel breakfast buffet, unlike in KL where hotels don't supply any pork products

I can't believe how much bacon 4 teenagers can go through in a week! We often get it in 2KG lots, sometimes several times a week (our boarder's father owns a butcher shop and pays part of his board in meat ;) )

Sorry, I don't think we can be friends anymore :P

On an unrelated noted, it's got a lot to do with the cut of the bacon. streaky bacon (ie, the stuff that's got big streaks of fat and is pretty rectangular in shape without the round bit on the end) crisps up a treat (comes from the belly, hence it's crispy and tasty)! I've found that's the stuff you want (and it seems to be more readily available in NZ and UK supermarkets, although I have seen it in Woolies and Coles here).

Your regular rashers and middle bacon, not so much. Better for those idiots who like soggy bacon ;)

See: Bacon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for all your bacon knowledge requirements!

I like bacon in Australia and i believe it may have something to do with the cut.

The bacon in Thailand just does not quite taste the same.

As for beef bacon well the less said the better....
