In December we are flying:

MEL-AKL DJ164 8th Dec
AKL-MEL DJ165 15th Dec

We are using the free flights associated with the Amex Platinum (Reserve) Card.

The flights are marketed as DJ flights but operated by Air New Zealand.

Depending where we look we have either:
zero baggage allowance (DJ web site under the booking reference),
zero baggage allowance (Amex email) or
23 kg baggage allowance (eticket also sent from Amex).

Put in perspective with both of us as DJ Platinum (normally 69 kg allowance).

What baggage are we really entitled to take?

These flights appear to be DJ booked and operated flights. The flights operated by Air NZ are listed as DJ8*** (8000 series nbrs). So would appear that you are booked on DJ's own flights by the flights numbers you have indicated

They are listed as being operated by an A320

Yeah, that's strange the 320 thing. I can only assume that it is DJ metal service (or a leased metal service with DJ rules) since:

  • The Amex flights currently only book on DJ metal &
  • the flight number is DJ's 'own'.

I would contact Virgin Australia and ask (during premium times) and mention the 320.

What is your "fare Description" on the DJ e-tiucket?

FWIW, the velocity web site indicates:

The "operated by" being blank is interesting.

See this guide: http://www.airnzagent.co.nz/assets/...n/Alliance-Trade-Brochure-final-v2.pdf#page=8

Page 8 indicates Gold get 32Kg on DJ services - this was put out before platinum was launched, but believe the 69Kg allowance given the flight number etc.

When I amke a booking online with my DJ WP number I see:

DJ have wetleased some Air NZ aircraft to operate some NZ-Aust services, not sure of the time line though. So is possibily their booking but NZ metal operated on behalf of DJ. So can only assume would be DJ baggage allowance

Ah, I did not look at that today.

Yesterday I talked to Virgin Premium and to Amex and the 'Operated by' definitely had Air New Zealand in it. I did not ask Virgin the question re baggage though. Amex said 23 kg but that was not making any allowance for status.

The other point of confusion was that the Virgin web site shows '*Seat Selection is eligible for this flight from 14 days prior to travel. Please visit Manage Bookings during this time to select your seat.' but this is not correct. Velocity Premium even had me sand them a screen shot of it in the booking.

OK, some answers.

The web site now says (again) Operated by: Air New Zealand for Pacific Blue.

Velocity Premium have now come back to me and tell me they have set our baggage allowance at 69 Kg each (heaven forbid)

They have also asked me to ring and they will do the seat allocations for us though I have not done that yet.

We are currently waiting to board this flight.

Seating 1D & 1F with 1E blocked. (serfty, 2D & F were not available)

Departure time has varied between 0930 and 0945 and back to 0930 this morning except 0945 seems to be the reality.

No issues with the process at all as it has gone very smoothly.
