I have a friend flying MEL-SYD-HNL on JQ all on the 1 ticket.

Reading Flight Connections | Jetstar it appears that you can not have the baggage tagged to HNL in MEL

Has anyone actually been able to have JQ tag the bags in MEL for them to HNL??

I know QF will tag it in MEL when flying QF MEL-SYD and then SYD-HNL on JQ.... in most cases

Otherwise the procedure is collect bags, then bus/taxi/train which is a PITA

A JQ employee in BNE told me that they don't interline baggage from JQ dom to JQi at MEL, SYD or CNS & from memory that was something to do with not having the staff (read not prepared to pay staff) to physically take the bags around to the international terminal for the next flight.

It wouldn't matter whether the MEL/SYD JQ & SYD/HNL flights were in the same pnr as that's not the issue.

So if you were travelling MEL/OOL/KIX all on JQ it would be okay. Wonder if anyone's actually successfully done this routing or any JQ dom to JQi routing for that matter?

Is it possible to somehow change your flight to a QF one for the MEL/SYD sector so your bags can be checked through to HNL?

What date are you travelling? I'm assuming it's not a Monday as JQ3 operates MEL/xSYD/HNL that day.

If you can't change the MEL/SYD flight to QF, JQ operate international flights between MEL/SYD eg on Wed JQ 30 1150/1315 & Fri JQ30 1130/1255. If booked this way, your bags should be through checked to HNL & you would receive both boarding passes MEL/SYD & SYD/HNL.

Note that you would clear outwards customs in MEL so you would be stuck airside in SYD for several hours which would be okay if you don't smoke, you've got lounge access or you know of someone who has that is willing to guest you in.

Having done a similar routing (i.e JQ6574->JQ37), the agent in Perth did ask if I did have any luggage to check, and if I did it would have to be reclaimed in SYD (No dramas as I was carry on only). Also had to wait for boarding passes as well as the JQ flight from SYD was not open when checking in at PER.
