Bankwest Transaction account [General Discussion]

I think the main point most are curious about is, is this only happening to accounts that have at one stage or another had 2 cards operating on the one account. It would be great if you could make this distinction when posting about these letters.

There doesn't appear to any distinct pattern. Looks like most with 2 cards on the one account are being terminated.
And some with 1 card (my whole family) are also being terminated.
Doesn't really matter ....... just get as many points as you can.

If Bankwest really wanted to stop this they would either, change the rules or cancel the scheme.

Got two more letters today, for 2 separate accounts (both for family members). This includes an account my fiancé opened just 3 weeks ago :-(

Both accounts have (had) more than one card. When we opened the account for my fiancé, we added me as a signatory; both cards are normal (non-Plat) cards and they arrived on the same day.

Glad i stopped when I did (thanks Optus for creating limitations), no letter so far! *fingers crossed*

 Sounds like keeping the account is more important to you than earning points? For me, personally, this account is as valuable as the points it earns me; without the points, accounts are a dime a dozen...

As stated previously 'make hay while the sun shines'.
Have the recent letters had a move on the 25th August as the cut off date?
It will be interesting to see if the points will post early next month.

I have received the "bad news" letter in the mail this afternoon for my account ( 2 cards ) . My partner (1 card ) the same address haven't received any letter yet . Will keep max out my 2 card until 31 AUG ( ended day ) and wait to see if the points post on 5 September .

Compare this to many letter everyone here received ( most with 2 cards ) i hope/think that bankwest have no idea about customer ordered 2nd cards and forgot to cancel first one . Think back out Ricky93 problem in the past it look like any account doing more than 50 transaction a day ( those with 2 cards and 100 transaction a day ) will trigger account close due to violate their 23.1 clause .

For those with 1 card and doing 50 a day i hope/think we will all be safe for the time being as long as we stay under 50 transaction a day and that will not break any term and condition from bankwest .

Yes i believe this is the key. Single card account at 50/day seem ok. I personally felt the 'trick' to get 2 was just pushing it too far

It funny remember how i keep asking my partner to go n get a second cards and she refuse to do it . It now her card is still alive for the time being told her the news yesterday and she laugh at me

I believe you need to stay way under 50 to be safe

Nope. My family all had 1 card each all doing 50 a day. All cancelled.

Bankwest appears to be still sending out letters.

My most recent letter (final account), dated 17 Aug, received 23 Aug, has cutoff date of 31 August.

I rather max out 50 per day until they decide to close it , let it be . Without 50 transaction per day this account have no use for us and we will be banking somewhere else . As we put all our spent on CC ( amex when possible to earn max rate )

Today was to be my final day with the account. I phoned them up to ask the reason why my account was being closed and the person I spoke to could not find any record against my account that it was going to be closed. He said that he'd put a note against my account that I didn't want it closed and said that it should prevent it from happening.

20 minutes after putting the phone down the account disappeared from my online logon!

BTW there is nothing in the T&Cs against you having more than one card. They state "There is a limit of one account per person, whether as a single or joint account holder." The number of cards is not mentioned.

No letter here - yet. I've got just the one card in the household, 50 tx per day. Maybe I'm under the radar, maybe not.

But seriously, this has been a fabulous lurk for years. BankWest must have handed out gazillions of points, for not a lot of income. I am astonished that it has lasted so long, with so many exploiting it, and so easily detectable.

My guess is that enough people used it to make a minor inconvenience into a major problem. It's in the nature of things that these lurks get bandied around and talked about in public forums. Do enough of that and everyone's onto it. Remember those lovely silvery W-F X-S giftcards?

I've done very well out of this. A nice wodge of points into my account. I'm grateful to BW and grateful to those here who have helped me with macros. Once again AFF has been a huge help.

Yeah, but they have well and truly covered themselves on the matter of misuse. I don't think a reasonable person could say that making a hundred one cent transactions a day every day of the year is proper use of the account. Clearly the intention is to get points for little or no cost rather than making normal use of a bank account.

Looks like the sun is going down, be thankful for the light while it lasted.

I wrote an email to them asking, very politely, if they could tell me what I have done wrong so that I could stop it, and whether they can give me an extension so that I could organise alternative arrangements. I received a reply back:

The circumstances that led to the closure of your account was the unusual use of your account to make multiple consecutive payment transactions at a very low value, some at one cent each, for payments (such as purchases at Coles) that would ordinarily be paid by one transaction.

Your Qantas Transaction Account was closed under the relevant clauses in our Investment & Transaction Accounts terms and conditions.

With this in mind, the Bank has provided you a 14 day period from the date of the letter to open a new facility with another financial institution before the account is closed by us. Whilst we appreciate your salary credits are currently being deposited into one of your Bankwest accounts, we cannot keep this account open beyond this 14 day period. The Bank allows customers 14 days in order to seek alternative financial arrangements for your salary credits to be deposited into, along with the changing of any direct debits or automatic payment, at another financial institution.

Please note, the accounts will be closed on this date so please ensure these details are changed beforehand to avoid any delays in your salary credits being received.

I just wished BW could issue a cease or decease, rather than a kill order. But as has been pointed out by others, I am grateful for the opportunity, and like to thank both Bankwest and AFF.
