Bankwest Transaction account [General Discussion]

I would push the issue. They tried that on me as well but relented when I said that I had a Bankwest email that states the following.

The one I received says the same. What they're saying is that I haven't clicked the link in my email and that's why I'm ineligible to receive the points. And although I have done everything according to the rules and should indeed get the points, that's the response the customer service rep got.

I don't remember exactly (because it was in June last year), but I might've gone to Bankwest's site to check out the promotion (and the fine print) and registered from there instead clicking 'Find out more' in my email and then going to the same place.

I don't remember having to actually register for the promo. You are owed the points IMO

There was definitely no requirement to sign up via an email or even via the website. At least not for the initial offer in April last year. I saw a poster for the promo in the window of a branch and went in and had them sign me up there. Received the bonus points without issue. I saw posters in the branches when the offer was on again later last year as well so assume it would have been the same.

That's what I think, too. I'm not even comfortable with clicking links in my email. We'll see what they say when they ring me back.

Thanks!

I signed my mum up by taking her into the branch....the officer knew the reason for the sign on was the points....as I dragged mum in on the last day of the promo I immediately put $2k across to her account...... No email linked clicked

Hahaha! I just got a phone call from a Manager at Bankwest who's looking into my case. I was asked about the details of the issue (again) and if I want to push this further. When I said yes, I was directly asked if I'm making small payments to get Qantas points (as if the account details appeared all of a sudden).

The Manager kept insisting on the fact that I hadn't clicked the link that would've made me eligible for the promotion. I was part of round two (around June) and I got an email from Qantas (not Bankwest), which only said "Find out more". I'll get a call back this afternoon and see what happens, but if this is as far as they'll go for something that's not even given out by Bankwest (but Qantas), I might just close my account and be done with it.

I've actually been pretty happy with the account, but if they're trying to get rid of customers, that's their problem.

Banking big boys (FOS). Then it will cost them more then giving you 10,000 points ($100 or less in points).

Just got another phone call back.

'The client still stands by the resolution to not give you any points as you didn't click the link provided' and 'I have to advise that if the minimum amount payments continue, we'll close down your account without any notice given.'

Thanks for nothing and yes, I think I'll be closing the account myself and bringing my money over to someone who cares.

That is remarkably odd. The cost of the purchasing the points from QFF must be starting to mount up and be considerably more than they budgeted for. For them to be starting to rein in where and when they pay points, it must be hurting them.

Time to pull my money out of the Account me reckons, lest they go broke overnight. (Are deposits still guaranteed by Govt, or was that just a post-GFC thing...?)

And once again, I'm the lucky one that draws the short straw. :-|

I was actually looking into a car loan from Bankwest just the other day, but seeing how they deal with their customers, I'm not very keen to try out how they deal with things bigger than promotional points.

First point, the 10K bonus wording was on the site itself at one time (this is why I take copies of things now). I agree with coles525, take it to FOS. You acted in response to an offer via email, as far as I know the email did not say you must click the link. I have always found threat of FOS was enough with actually doing it, except once. They were on the phone to me within 2 hours offering to resolve.

Point 2, did you state that closing the account without notice is contrary to their own T&C's and once again you'd take to FOS.

I attached a screenshot of the email when I aaked them to reconsider their decision. I'll ask them for a written confirmation so that I can take it further if needed.

I can understand not giving me the points (as unfair it is), but threatening me is just unacceptable.

This.
If they play hard ball, you do the same and take it further.

For the car loan may I suggest you have a look at Qantas CU, I found their service very reasonable. As a bonus they only charge interest on your remaining balance, not calculate it upfront as most of the banks, i figured i saved a fair bit of money that way too.

Thanks for the tip, ramamba. I'll look into it.

I've transferred all my money out of the Bankwest account and cancelled all pending and recurring payments. I'll look into the T&Cs once again over the weekend (to check if there's something about minimum payments) and then draft an email.

I just checked the Qantas email again and it doesn't mention clicking a link or anything similar. When I checked via Online Chat later on, I was indeed instructed to click the link, but there still wasn't anything more than "Find out more" in it.

Thanks for all the advice and support, everyone.

If you are going to close the account anyway what is the purpose of emailing them about the minimum payment argument? Wouldn't that bring further attention to those of us who are making small payments? We already know there is nothing in the T&C prohibiting it so why argue it when this could prompt them to change the T&C? My suggestion would be to leave the account open, ignore the request to stop making those payments and continue to do it as much as possible. As it currently stands they will pay you points for whatever transactions you make. If they close your account then that's life. There will be more promotions out there.

The argument here is the bank not honouring the original promotion incentive of 10000 bonus QF points for opening and operating the account for 3 months

You're right – maybe I shouldn't close the account. Nevertheless, I wanted to get the majority of my money out of it.

And my argument isn't the minimum payments, but the 10,000 points I was promised. If I keep on fighting for those, then I don't want them to grab onto the issue of minimum payments and threaten me with that.

Im aware of what the argument is.

I'm simply saying I would avoid discussion about the minimum payment with anyone either on the phone or face to face. My wife spoke to someone several months ago and they happened to notice she was making 1c payments and told her it was against the T&C. She didn't argue, continued to make them, continues to get the points and has heard nothing about it.

Polardabar - For sure I would continue to push for the bonus which you are entitled to but its my opinion that it's best to avoid the convo about min payment. I doubt the person you are speaking to has any authority to close the account. More likely just some person telling you to stop the same as my wife got. Just keep making them and keep pushing for the bonus in the ways others have suggested.
