As a couple, is it better to have the middle rear facing pair or a window/aisle combo so you can look at each other with the divider down?

On the A380. Upper or lower deck? Obviously if upper, then it would be window/aisle combo facing each other. Looking at the layout, if you want a view of something other than the wing, the forward J cabin upstairs appears to be the best bet.

For the record, flights are day time flights and not likely to sleep (TLV to LHR and LHR to IAD).

It is so subjective.

....however I would definitely go for the upper deck on the A380 particularly if you can get the forward cabin. The toilets are significantly better, you get side storage and it feels less cramped.

On the odd occasions MrsH has accompanied me we tend to go for the window/aisle combo, but the middle seats on the 777, particularly if you can get the last row so you are not climbing over anyone, are nice and private for a couple.

The general "dorm" feel is not great but I find the seats an improvement over the QF A380 SkyDroopBed MkII.
