I recently was in Hobart, and had the opportunity to stay at the Islington hotel. What a fabulous place to stay, this small and very personal hotel in my opinion is one of the best boutique hotels in Australia.

What was good about it? Never heard of it. Did you post on trip advisor?

The Islington does get good write ups regulalrly. For me it is a bit far out of town, so you'll still need a car to get anywhere. I like Henry Jones Art Hotel and Somerset on the Pier (for serviced apartments), both of which are on the waterfront and walking distance to everything.

+1 recommending the Henry Jones Art hotel on the pier. So well located, and every room is different so you could stay there multiple times and not get bored with the rooms!

If only staying in Hobart for a short time and not renting a car I would not reccommend staying here...

You'll be in for a long walk

Even in the deep south of Hobart, they do have a transport called a taxi, 5 min to the CBD

-1 for the Henry Jones Art hotel. We had a room above the entry to the bar, courtyard and it was extremely noisy. You heard the automsatic door opening every time.Would go to midnight for the bar then from about 6am as the staff arrived.Asked if we could be moved-told no and that no one had ever complained about the room before.
Then had dinner in their restaurant.Meal was advertised as having a "homemade sauce".My meal had plastic wrapping the size and consistency of that found around the cap of a sauce bottle you would get at a supermarket. The reaction of the Maitre'D after I told our waiter was initially I must have put it in the dish.Eventually after raising my voice and pointing out that this was likely to be from a sauce bottle hence sauce not homemade we were offered a complimentary dessert-just 1 mind you.Totally unsatisfactory service.

Avoid the Mercure, unless it has undergone a serious refurb in the past 3 years.....

Wow, that's appalling! I'd chalk the noise up to bad luck (see below) but when was that? That's seriously terrible from the restaurant!

We were in the old wood lined "financial office" which is essentially adjacent to the function area and looks out to the front of the hotel (wharf area) and had zero noise problems (a Friday and Saturday night stay). We stayed again the followng Saturday, and were in a different room overlooking the courtyard (which had a function on) and had no noise issues. Hotel was chockers too.

My preferred hotel was the Sheraton, which is why I now find it difficult to recommend anything else in Hobart other than the Somerset on the Pier.

I've always had a good experience with the Grand Chancellor. Food was quite good there too.

Henry Jones Art Hotel without a doubt best hotel in Hobart - a multitude of fabulous restaurants within walking distance - I love this location.

Yes agree here as well. Especially good when I was top of the tree with SPG.
