Have 300k miles to expire 2015. Any suggestions to make good use of these? Return preferably but not essential, in J or F, from/to SYD.

Looking at award chart it looks like there's far greater value in using miles for multi-carrier OW award ticket, with or without CX, rather than just CX alone.

Out of SYD, possibility of QF, BA, CX, MH, JL.

Award zone 8 or 9 is what I would like to keep within - 14k/18k miles.

Companion tickets and OW awards usually best value for AMs

There was one FT post where the advice was to book the companion award seat before the revenue booking ticket had been issued to avoid the scenario where there is no award seat for the companion.

Sound good in theory but how does that work ?

How could you have a confirmed booking (in order to book a companion award) without paying first ?

Thanks

just from personal experience using my asia mile points to book 4 J class ticket recently on line. from australia to other part of the world apart from hong kong - near impossible with one single booking on line.

i had to do it by sectors. australia to hong kong on one booking , then from hong kong to other parts of the world.

found that j class ticket from australia to hong kong extremely limited even though I book for late december 2014 to early Jan 2015

wondering if CX is limiting the availability for australian to get award tickets because we are such a good market for them ?

It might also be that late December/early January is the Christmas/New Year period. You might have better chances during less busy times - also watch out for Chinese New Year.

Cathay J opens up 7 and 3 days before departure. As an example tomorrow there are 7 J award seats available on both CX110 and CX100. So 14 seats on one day so long as you are flexible enough to plan very last minute.

Can someone please point me in the right direction for the award chart for CX - I can't find it anywhere on their website! Surely I must be missing something straight forward.
