Hello All!

I'm heading over to the US for a 3 week road trip from LA to NYC in October. Just wondering when would be the best time to try and book a vehicle? Is it like air fares and there is a sweet spot, or just any time before landing is best?

I was originally planning to purchase a car over (Boxster or S200) there for the drive and have my friend in NYC sell it, but the laws are frankly idiotic so that's not going to be an option. Anyone know any website where I can get something that is reasonably sporty as well? Best I can find at the moment is a convertible V6 Mustang...be nice to at least have a V8 of some description or something that will enjoy going around corners.

Thanks

From my experience, hire car prices in the US don't change that much.

As for premium vehicles, look at the Hertz range (depends on location obviously). I have had some V8 luck with them in the past.

Sign up to a couple of carn rental companies email specials, then book when a deal comes out.

i find the prices don't change a lot, Avis etc will have the higher end cars, but I'm happy using Alamo or National.

I have looked at the Aus availability esp if say wanting to move something biggish that would only fit in a small camper. A large carpet for example!

I booked a Mustang convertible thru Hertz before leaving Oz. Fronted up to pick up the car in San Diego and all they could give me was a Toyota Camry. Humph :(

For a guaranteed V8 look at the Hertz Adrenaline collection (Mustang hardtop, Dodge Challenger,Camaro hardtop or Camaro convertible,Corvette).Or even a Boxster....
Dont think you can book one-way rental online for these car types, but try calling if you are really keen for one.
3 weeks out seems a good time, but throw some dummy dates in and see how the price fluctuates (ie 6mths from now,2 mths from now, and 3 weeks from now)
Hertz also have 'reserve exact model' options so you know what you're getting (as opposed to booking 'Mustang or similar' and ending up with a Camry as per above, which is a cheaper rate, but leaves you at the mercy of availability....)
