Best value reliable car hire in USA

Hi all, I'm planning a USA trip May 2023. I haven't travelled for years (like many). Prices seem to be up across the board.

Is there meta search site which reliably finds the best prices and provides a real booking? I've been stuck at the airport counter a couple of times getting stiffed on the bill.

We used arguscarhire this week which is a trawler site and we got the car thru them to Alamo. Went RAV4 or equivalent and we are happy with the Nissan Rogue hatch seeing there will be three of us next week. The US is quite a bit more expensive after our 2.5 year break due to Covid and eating out in Australian dollars terms is much higher. Add a double the sales tax for your tip….you will notice that.

Kayak and Skyscanner aggregate quite a few websites, but I'd also be open to other suggestions.
