As an occasional ( :) ) grizzler about Qantas' on-ground service, I'm obliged to report a good (so far) recovery of irrops.

QF1010, 6am HBA-MEL service, which I was taking to connect to a Sydney flight for just a day in Sydney (ie returning in the late afternoon) went tech after we had pushed back, already 20 mins late. Was told by the pilot that an engineer had to be flown down from Melbourne, and he'd arrive no earlier than 9:30, so the earliest the flight could depart was 10am, but don't count on it.

Got back into the terminal at about 7:15 to find no seats on alternative flights in the next few hours. I called the Plat line and gingerly asked what my options were, noting it was just a day trip. They offered to transfer the itinerary to tomorrow, and there would be no charge (my flights were red-E deals). I don't know if they were waiving any charge or if I wouldn't be charged anyway. I was even able to adjust the flights a bit AND they carried over my points upgrade to business for HBA-MEL tomorrow. :)

Only issue is that, notwithstanding that I have been 'un-checked in' from all the flights, Qantas' reservation system doggedly refused to release me from today's HBA-MEL flight. i'm assured being a 'no show' for that won't lead to problems - cross fingers.

Other than I'll have a second 4am wake-up tomorrow, all good. I see QF1010 is now promised to depart at 11:00am - about now. I'm still getting alerts and updates on it because the computer still thinks I'm on it. :( Wonder if i'll get the points and SCs?

4am wake up, Jesus! I hope the trip is important enough :p

Nice recovery and fingers crossed for the double dipping :)

The rebooking to the next day is pleasing for you and good that it doesn't cost you extra in the fare, but it's hardly a 'recovery' from 'disrupted operations.'

Forcing you to delay your trip for a day would not suit everyone with prebooked meetings or tasks to undertake on a specific day.

Every time I swear I'll never do another pre 9am departure, there I go and do it again :( . Got one out of JFK coming up - that'll be fun. Yeah, I had to make a trip to Sydney sometime in the next couple of weeks and no need for the cost of an overnight stay.

Fair enough, but its 'recovery' enough for me :). I got back home at about 8:30 and can do a full days study here, so all its cost me is a couple of hours sleep.

QF1010 now advised to depart at 11:30 - so they are obviously doing the 30 minute auto-rolling delay thing. I made the right decision!

Mrs Happy Dude was on a late aftee VA CBR-SYD-MEL flight on NYE when the plane was forced to turn back to CBR before landing in SYD. With no other options available for that night, they offered to replicate her itinerary for the following day. It was an award booking so no money or SCs to worry about. However with a bit of polite encouragement, she managed to get them to put her on a direct CBR-MEL flight first thing the next morning and they put her in the airport hotel so she didn't have to faff about with cabs and an obscene early wake up. That's great IRROPS recovery.
