I'm looking at going from Perth to Syd for Xmas (yes terrible timing I know) but the fares are very odd.

For example 21-Dec from per-syd, some of the flexible fares are more expensive than J

On 22-Dec, there is a Red-e-deal for $1,953

Other ones as well, Business is cheaper than economy. Why would you book Y?

Slow time of year for business travel +
Heavy time of year for Leisure travel =>
quite a bit of discount J availability +
high cost WHY availability.

QF652 PER-BNE & QF507 BNE-SYD

Red-E-Deal $1953
Flexi Saver $2108
Business $2296

That makes sense. I think that QF652 is in Business, and QF507 is in economy.

Not sure why it classes it as a red-e-deal though.

On Qantas that day, there are NO WHY seats available on any direct PER-SYD flight.

Routings are via AD/BNE/MEL, with via BNE being rather expensive.

I ahve noticed that sometimes if one of the sectors is on a red-e-deal, the whole thing gets called one.

Given QF652 PER-BNE is showing:

J4 D1 I0 B0 H0 K0 M0 R0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0 X0 E0

and QF507 is showing:

J7 D5 I0 B9 H9 K9 M9 R9 L9 V9 S9 N3 Q3 O0 X3 E0

We have a J fare to BNE and and N class onward to SYD ... hence a red e-deal.

Forget Xmas and Perth to Syd, try looking at SYD-BNE for next Monday, Jetstar is dearer than QF with one flight leaving the same time as QF!

Thanks for the help. I still don't understand, Y one would book Y when J is cheaper?

I can see it now.. 'Now Jenkins, our travel policy is economy for Australia. I realise Business is cheaper, but we can't change the rules to suit ourselves, can we young Jenkins?" :)

The fares look normal for all dates/routes I have checked

So when I do a search, right now, for a one-way from Per-Syd on 22-Dec, the 9.45 flight Per-Adl-Syd is 1,922 for fully flexible but only 1,727 for business, that is "normal"?

I would say one of the flights has no Y availibility and one of them is in J either way (probably PER-ADL).

The fully flexible fare would be two single fares a J and a Y

The business fare would be a through fare all in J

Apologies - I was only looking at direct flights.
Would no doubt be because the cheaper segment in J is a through-fare.

Oh for the days when the price was set on the basis of origin and destination only. If no direct availability and you were forced to route via an intermediate point, fare was the same.

(All subject to a strong IIRC)

Yes i remember this also. Meant you could chase a lot more SC's without paying out more money. Or could visit some ports that you had not before.

Yeah ... the rot started to set in with the inclusion of segment related taxes, the more segments the higher the cost, - and then fuel fines came. :-| This is still noticeable when doing awards ...

That type of pricing is still available in the US, e.g. YUP fares.
