In the last month, BNE has exceeded Melbourne for aircraft movements for the first time to take second place for non GA airports!

FIFO no doubt a factor.

Any data on the passenger count, as I would think MEL has more wide-body flights?

Quite a difference in pax numbers.....
Pax number quoted are for year ended April. The opening post notes just one the movement for the one month of June. Would be interesting to compare the pax number and movements for the same period. Things may have changed a little over the 15 months covered by the stats.

Over the past 2 weeks, flying into BNE on weeknights I’ve certainly noticed the hassles of holding patterns, it’s definitely busier than I remembered, though I do fly as much as possible on weekends.

I think if you look at the number of Qantaslink/Alliance flights in BNE vs the number in MEL accounting for much of the total movement difference, and the "average" domestic metal (763), and the "average" international arrival, MEL should still be comfortably in front on passenger numbers.

Quite so Sam, I've also noticed slowing down enroute to avoid the holding patterns as well. Before never a problem, today quite common

Townsville numbers after July will be inflated due to AFF member's SC runs caused by QF's SC x2 offer :D

There was a couriermail article last week explaining why the holds are in place. And the new parallel runway is still 6 years away.

Very interesting- I fly into Brissy quite a bit and noticed recently that hardly ever you avoid the holding pattern if you're arriving during evening peak hours.

It is not only at peak times that you can get placed into a holding pattern arriving into Brisneyland.
A couple of weeks ago I was returning from Melbourne on a flight due to land at 1225 on a Monday afternoon and we not only got slowed down in flight, but then got put into holding over the Gold Coast for about 15minutes.

Did someone say holding pattern?

I find that come up from south to bne you often get slowed .. and maybe one or two laps before landing.

I think BNE needs a second runway soon (I mean one that can handle jets)

The cross runway (14/32) can take jets up to a certain performance level. Converging runway operations are only available for certain configurations (01 and 14/32) by day only. No converging runway operations for 19. No converging runway operations allowed at night at all, which is what the article was referring to.

This morning was a shocker, the sequence started around 7 and went through to about 1.30, average delay I seen was about 20 mins per aircraft and some blew out to 45. That's a lot of fuel burnt.

What won't help is when they lose 14/32 for about 6 months (probably commencing around September) to allow works for the new parallel runway.

Worst time to fly into BN are Thursday nights. I think Tuesday mornings are getting up there as well....

I have not had an arrival into BNE this year that was on time. Most departures were on time, but not had one on-time arrival. All arrivals have been early evening, and I am talking about a sample of 12-15 flights. I know text Mrs NM when boarding on time suggesting a 20-30 minute delay in arrival. Lets see how tomorrow evening's flight pans out.

So are you saying it does NOT happen if you come from the North? I ever only fly up from Sydney or Melbourne (or across all the way from DFW) so I wouldn't know...
