Hi All,

Apologies if this is already discussed or the wrong place to post this thread as very much still a Newbie at this, I searched & read a lot of threads, now more confused then ever...lol! Need some help please, I am flying SQ236 BNE-SIN on Christmas Day, is it possible & worth the upgrade to Business (J) with my Velocity points as have no KrisFlyer points, if so what is the best way to do this? I believe the aircraft is 777-200 but not sure which version as apparently there are a few. I am only looking at the upgrade for 1 way as I will be flying SIN-HKG on 1/1/2018. I am a Gold Velocity Member with almost 90K points, don't want to pay $$$ as it is a work trip & there is no option to travel on another airline, work uses SQ for trips.

Thank you in advance, if you need more info, please feel free to ask & appreciate any comments.

Cheers.

You cant upgrade, you just cancel and book another seat.
If the J seats are available, then you can book through the Velocity redemption bookings. If there is no seat, then you cant.

My experience is, from watching a lot of these flights for the same reason, is if SG has business reward seats available, then you can get them through Velocity.

Are you flying SQ236 (as indicated in your post above) or SQ256 (as referred to in the title of this thread)? I flew SQ256 recently and it's a day flight operated by the new A350 aircraft. SQ236 departs BNE in the afternoon and arrives SIN in the evening.

Thank you, that’s an easy decision then...lol! I can’t cancel as it is a work trip.

Thank you & sorry, it’s SQ236 the afternoon flight!

This is not true if the OP has a commercial booking in Y, B or E classes, Velocity points can (through transfer to Krisflyer @ 1.35:1) be used to secure an upgrade.

For SQ 236, which does not have a premium economy cabin, they can be used to upgrade a Y, B or E class booking to business class for 45,000 KF miles = 60.750 Velocity points. The downside is that if the upgrade is not available for instant confirmation, and the OP has to waitlist. If the waitlist doesn't come through, then it is a permanent conversion into KF miles, which have 3 years life only.

Thank you for that, is there anyway to find out the availability before doing the transfer. Is the points transfer instant? In your opinion, is it worth it? Sorry for all the questions.

Transfer of points is pretty instant but youre better off calling the SQ line to check available seats.

Depends on what your alternative plans for those Velocity points are. The business class product on SQ 236, whilst being the oldest long haul business class product (circa 2007), is still pretty good - 1-2-1 configured cabin with all aisle access and large wide seats (many say too wide, but that can be managed with careful placement of cushions). Add on that some good service by the crew, then it should be a nice treat over usual economy.

Thank you dajop, no plans for those points, you make it sound really enticing. What is the most accurate & quickest way to check for availability as I don't want to have any points stuck in my KrisFlyer profile. Also will I still earn any points or status credit for the flight with Velocity or will it be for KrisFlyer?

It would be whichever of your membership number recorded against the booking...
