Hi Guys, First time poster here needing some help, wonder if someone can give me a hand.

I'd like to fly from BNE to LHR in November and looking for the best way to go about it. I'd really like a few days stopover somewhere but with Qantas my options only seem to be Singapore or Bangkok which I don't really want to do.

I see that Cathay are partners with Qantas and they run out of HK so my question is are there any limitations on claiming points, are Cathay any cop, and if anyone has any better recommendations for a stopover then I'd like to hear them! I am also thinking of purchasing Qantas club for my travels as I have a few flights a year with work, and whilst I am over in the UK will probably take a few flights around Europe. Would it be worth it?

Thanks heaps. :)

Welcome to AFF rbn!

I haven't flown CX in Y (not sure what class you intend to fly) but I've heard good reports (though the 'shell' seats upset some - mind you I think they're on the way out). I believe some of the cheaper economy CX fares may not earn on QF (or perhaps earn at 50% or something), so be careful to check this if flying Y.

Qantas Club won't be much help flying CX I'm afraid, it only gets you access to lounges on QF, BA and AA (when flying those airlines).

If you wished to keep it QF, you could potentially travel via SYD or MEL - a bit longer but you get lounge access.

I think HKG is a great place to visit on a stopover. Whatever you do, enjoy your trip.

Have flown both Y and J on CX, shell seats in Y are being replaced now, SYD/HKG have been done. Excellent airline with super service, should get full points in both classes. Been to HK many times, airport one of the best in the world and very efficient, also HK is great place for dining, shopping and sight seeing. Kowloon is place to stay, good reasonably priced hotel is Salisbury near waterfront.

Also check Finnair-codeshare with QF.Can go to HEL via those you mention but also flights from Shanghai, beijing,Osaka,Nagoya Singapore.
They are OW so no troubles with points.November though a bit cold in HEL-though we really enjoyed our stopover there.

If you are intent on flying QF there is the option of a stopover in HKG if you fly via MEL. A creative travel agent could be able to wangle it for you.

Other options can be found here. Check Cathay Pacific and Finnair for points and status credits.

I agree with a poster above, investigate Finnair. You can fly QF or CX to HKG then on to HEL and the rest of Europe on AY. Shop around for prices and let agents know what other agents are offering.

Husband flew Y with my cousin on cousin's business trip on CX and they didn't get one point as it was in a non earning Y category. I think it was S, even their TA was surprised as it was exactly the same fare as the Q equivalent.

Yes, as others have mentioned not very many of the CX whY fares earn points or SCs. Check the partner earning table on the QF website.

S bucket doesn't earn. I found out the hard way going to Delhi once.. The QF earning table shows which fares do earn though..

Another vote here for Finnair! Transiting through HEL if you don't want to stop is so easy, but you will get no benefit from Qantas Club....

Friends of mine are travelling in Y on Finnair now, and no complaints!

Like others, for a stopover, I love Hong Kong.... Getting around is a breeze and the sights and shopping offer plenty for everyone!

Enjoy!

But if SG or WP you can access the finnair lounge and it is quite satisfactory.

Why does OP need CX to get to HKG from BNE? QF97 is BNE-HKG and QF98 is HKG-BNE.

Hi All, Thanks for the comments and warm welcome.

I decided to hit up the Qantas Global Sale and book BNE -> HK (QF97) -> LHR (QF29) and then LHR -> BNE (QF10/QF52) via SIN, although I believe as its a sale fare its classed as disc econ for points :-(

Really looking forward to flying on the A380 and the new A330!

I was going to purchase Qantas Club however I will be travelling with my partner, however on the way back I am bringing back a family member. I understand I can only sign 1 guest into the lounge, is there anyway I can get my elderly Nan in too?

Thanks.

Unlikely you will get your Nan in, but you could always try - will be at discretion of staff on the day.All Economy fares are paid at Discount unfortunately, except full Y which is never competitively priced so you wouldn't bother.
