Thats a good way I get your attention!
Really I decided this year that I would travel more , and work less.

I looked at my budget and how I could save money (to pay off credit cards) then to buy more travel!

I worked out a neat little plan - Each day I buy a piece of Banana Bread with a coffee at work for a grand total of $3.50 - but I thought 'it can't be that hard to make a large banana bread at home for a lot less, cut it up ,freeze it and then take it to work each day! '

Total cost saved :
$3.50 per day =
$17.50 per week =
$840 per year (@ 48 week year)

Thats enough for a one day trip somewhere good quite easily .
I started this after I realised that the 'richest' people tend to spend way bellow their needs and although I hated cooking in the beginning I have started to enjoy it.

Anyone else have interesting ways to save money?

Don't eat banana bread at all and save on the flour/bananas/milk....;)

However.....I don't spend coins at all and put all loose change in a bucket and it gets me a couple of thousand every year.

But what about the cost of the goods used to make the banana bread and the electricity/gas, along with the lost opportunity the might occur if you find half price meat or bread etc and cannot store it in the freezer because its full of banana bread

Ahh
Ingredients = $4.00
Electricity = $.75 (worked out using daily ave and the wonderful Energex wireless powermeter)

So as you are in this saving mode we won't ever see you at AFF Brisbane drinks. If you die you can't take your money with you.
I still buy all my normal extras - but in my mind I can use that extra that extra money for other things. And I would of come to drinks if I didnt have plans!

I guess the point is that where I could easily afford to buy the banana bread, but I get a sense of value knowing that I have made it myself and saved a couple of bucks , as my hecs isnt going to pay itself off!

I used the coins in the car this evening to buy myself a cheap meal at McDonald’s and not have to worry about touching my savings account :)

We emptied to piggy bank late last year that had been collecting change since last decade and it only had ~$45 or so, so you must collect a lot more than me!

tuppaware, come along to BNE AFF drinks and we’ll tell you how to save more money, while spending it on booze :D

Per the actual threads topic though, I get an allowance  and save about a quarter of it as soon as I get it every month. Simply move it to another account and try not to touch it, then when I want to book a flight (in a sale of course), I have money to work with.

And I was starting to plan 12 trips a year to SIN. ;)

I try to stop the amount of money I spend but I struggle as I am very addictive and really have very little hope of stopping my addictions.

One thing I found works for me is to take no cash to Brisbane for the week I am up there.

Where ever possible I will use Amex but not overdo it. I will buy some groceries at Woolworths, buy a few beers at the Mill during BNE drinks nights etc. I do not eat out. I bring cooked food from Sydney and then cook for myself for the other 2-3 nights.

Another thing I do now, since Brisbane shuts down before 9:00pm, is buy Pure Blonde when it is on special (2 cases for $80) and keep it stored in my room. The last lot I bought was in November last year and I still have heaps. The Qantas lounge is also my sponsor.

And best of all is every opportunity I give my mother any leftover cash. I have almost saved up my spending money for the June trip to Thailand and I am now working on the October trip. I have already saved up the spending money for the end of year trip to Thailand. Thanks mum.

Now to conecentrate on saving for airfares and spending money for the 4 trips to Thailand in 2011....

Pancakes

... you see the mixes in the store and I have no idea why, 1 cup SR flour, 1 cup of milk and 1 egg

easy dessert - interestingly you could add your banana to that when you are too lazy to make the bread

I don't think there is anything wrong with being canny with your money. Its different than being miserly..you still splash out with the $ but on the stuff thats a better return for your dollars

My pet hate is buying lunches at work, makes no sense to me.. I know a guy who does that every day. Just think if he saved it he could take extra annual leave!

Thats a much better use of the money :)

I am very lucky, we (hubby and I) are on a trip atm and we had to fund the first six months of for the both of us with no pay.

So I am a BIG believer in saving for the good stuff!

Can't remember the last time I paid for lunch at work.

At the moment we have home grown tomatoes and cucumber in Sydney. So lunch in Brisbane for the last couple of months has been tomato, cucumber and a little bit of Dodoni fetta cheese. Wish I could lose as much weight as the money I save on lunch....

.

Hmm pure blonde ..
Btw -- there are pockets of Brisbane that dont close sooo early. Valley , West End.

If I can get out of the Partners family event (sigh) then I might be there.

It does not have to be Pure Blonde. I noticed earlier this afternoon Tooheys Extra Dry was 2 cartons for $72 at BWS. That is great value at $1.50 a bottle.

Yes I know pockets of Brisbane do not close too early but I am better off in my apartment posting on AFF than spending, wasting, unnecessary money on overpriced alcohol. By the way I do not need to have a drink everyday. Firday, Saturday, Sunday and special Brisbane drinks nights once a month are more than enough when I am in Australia.

Just to give a stupid example with some simple mathematics. I budget to spend $150 a day for golf, drink, food, accommodation and any entertainment when I am in Thailand. Most clubs/pubs in Australia want $5+ for a beer which works out to $120+ a carton. I would rather have a drink in my apartment than go out for a drink on my own. Once you start travelling regularly you become much more aware of the money easily wasted.

Haven't had a drink on a Firday for yonks either.

Had a drink this Firday John?
Yes Sam I have had a few drinks this Friday.

So what is your point? People can't make spelling mistakes? If you notice the f is next to the d and when these two letters are together on the keyboard some people are liable to make typing errors whether they have had a drink or not. Duck Sam. :p

I do preview my posts yet I still make mistakes. Sadly when you have multiple threads/tabs open and other various tabs in use, I'm almost rushing to do each and every thing.
