I want to book a QR flight oneway from Dar-Doh-Mel. The QF website won't let me use Dar as the origin. If I do a multicity booking, I can have the first flight as Syd to Mel for example, and the QF website will then allow me to have Dar as the origin of the 2nd flight, and I can book Dar-Doh-Mel. I took the above dummy booking scenario all the way to the payment stage, and assuming I can pay, are there any issues having a ticket with the first sector completely unrelated to the rest of the itinerary?

If you fail to fly on the first sector the rest of the itinerary will be cancelled, so that's not really a good idea. Can you be in Australia at the time of the SYD-MEL sector? Otherwise, perhaps you can get a friend to fly the SYD-MEL sector for you? Technically against the rules but as we still don't have ID checks for HLO flights in Australia...

Without the Australia origin city, note that because Qantas doesn't fly to/from Tanzania, they don't have the necessary business and financial setups to support that as an origin city. There are workarounds for paid tickets, but I don't think you can do this for an award seat.

I’ve had awards issued in Aussie currency previously for flights leaving Bangkok in the days when QF didn’t have its own merchant sales facilities there, same with China. So I think it can be done… but that was in the days when I was (a) platinum, then gold and (b) all calls were answered in Australia by competent agents.

Its not what you are asking, but surely that wouldn't ticket? Plenty of examples on AFF of even 'reasonable' and 'straightforward' itineraries failing at the payment stage.

One hell of an open jaw!!

PS .. if it did ticket, can you imagine having to call the Sth Africa call centre to have a problem fixed

In answer to a Q above, I will definitely fly the Syd-Mel leg so the rest of itinerary isn't invalidated. If I use AA miles I can definitely book oneway Dar-Doh-Mel. I just have a little more Qf points than AA miles so prefer to use the former if I can :) I'm still Qf Plat so still have 50:50 access to Hobart. I guess the alternative is to ring Qf and try to book the award ex Dar over the phone!

I would book over the phone. As you have QR sectors involved you don’t want to chance anything requiring a re ticket… like QF cancelling or moving your SYD-MEL. If they do that and decide to re ticket you the rest could fall over.

Also 16k points cheaper.
