Have just had a return trip with wife to Cairns from Brisbane. As we were only away for three nights decided to book only one fare with luggage and the other with out luggage. Went on line with VA and could not do this. Was either both with luggage or both without.

Phoned the call centre to see if there was anything I was doing wrong. The response was if I wanted a mixed booking with luggage choices then would need to do two seperate bookings.

I then checked Jetstar site and you can do mixed luggage options on line. As their flight was around the same time and about $25 each cheaper decided to go with Jetstar for the trip up.

As the timing of the flight back with VA suited us best did two seperate bookings with VA and was able to get seats next to each other 17B and 17C.

When we arrived at the Cairns airport yesterday had trouble with the self serve kiosk and as no one in line went to check in. The boarding passes we were given were row 26. When I replied that I had booked row 17 the response from the ground agent was that I had booked seats across the aisle from each other and row 26 was the closest that we could be seated together.

Flight was only about 1/2 full and most of the passengers were seated in front of exit rows. The plane was the new version of the 737-800 with business. As we boarded just before the flight closed were able to see no passengers in row 17 either side. In fact very few passengers between rows 17 and 26 and only 3 passengers behind us in row 26.

Upon my return I checked seat guru which confirmed seats 17B and 17C were next to each other so do not know what the ground agent was on about.

The seat thing was an outright lie. Did you get their name? I'd suggest sending feedback to Virgin about it.

The seat thing is apparantly to balance the aircraft. Same thing happened on my last ROK flt where it appeared all non-status pax were reticketed at the gate to the back rows. Very light load and it was status up front, non-status down the back and no one in the middle.

IIRC the old booking system did allow you to do exactly as you want to do. Another excellent improvement in the booking process

Swanning your response makes sense to me though would have to guesstimate that only about 20 passengers or so behind exit row.

If the ground agent had said to me that my reallocation was due to operational or saftey reasons would have understood and not have posted. However I walked away not believing the ground agent.

Medhead I did not get her name but would have to say it was one of the most disinterested and unpleasant ground agents I have come across.

This day and age you would think booking a saver lite and a saver together would seem logical. So now if I travel with a non status pax I have to book a saver with them if they want to take luggage otherwise they would not benifit from the preferred seating and priority boarding I get when on the same booking.

It certainly did, you could book differing amounts of luggage per PAX.

It didn't at first. There was a long period there where you couldn't. I suspect it took them a while to make the feature work and will take a while again to implement under sabre.

What I don't understand is .. why can't ground crew just tell people the truth?! How hard is it to say "We've re-allocated your seats to ensure the plane is properly balanced, I'm sorry we can't keep you in your originally requested seats"? OP, please please submit feedback :-|
