The Hilton Hawaiian Village (a great place for penguins)
There are many entrances to the Hilton Hawaiian Village and as we walk into the complex we are briefly disorientated by the floods of guests and choices of direction. In fact there are four towers (I think) plus a conference centre, multiple shopping arcades, restaurants and swimming pools. I eventually spot a sign to the main hotel lobby and we duck and weave amongst other guests along what seems an interminable distance and many turns, which feel like they are bringing us back to our starting point.
Eventually we find the main lobby area. It is now about 9am and a lengthy queue of folk lining up to check out. I regard this extensive queue with mounting horror whilst hopeful of an early check in. Luckily there is a spot for Hilton Honors VIP guests with nobody waiting so we march boldly past everyone and station ourselves by the HH signage. We are quickly summoned to service, granted early check in and swipe cards. There doesn’t appear to be an Executive Lounge here, but we are supplied with breakfast vouchers.
The room is large and has two queen beds, a balcony with a partial ocean view and the usual Hilton accoutrements of bathroom accessories, robes, and so forth. Canuck finds a wireless Internet service for a modest daily rate so we can keep the email ticking over.
The breakfast vouchers save us both about $30 worth of food each morning since the buffet spread is extensive – I fill up on oats, cold meat and salad sandwiches, fruit and yoghurt – and the spread panders nicely to Canuck’s thriftiness. I marvel at the system of meet and greet, and various table service duties carried out be a busy bevy of attendant staff. They are clearly geared to process serious numbers of guests when demands dictate.
The hotel is well presented, the garden areas are immaculately maintained and the only very minor downside is that the beachside bar/café is a little on the tacky/down market end for my personal tastes and gives up meal service well before 9pm, which is extraordinary for a hotel complex of such capacity. There is a gym, which offers free entry for HH Gold members, but this was verging on being overcrowded.
The bar area in the centre of the complex offered friendly and efficient service. I soon discovered that the Samuel Adams Summer Ale and local Longboard beer were to my taste. The Blue Moon (I think a wheat beer style that arrived with a lump of orange) was disgusting and for the first time in living memory a glass of beer went undrunk!
I noticed that bar staff always break down the change so dollar bills are included. What was that about not forgetting to leave a tip?!
Overall I am impressed with the Hilton Hawaiian Village although I would hesitate to stay there in high season when I sense that facilities such as the breakfast restaurant and check in area, and gym would be over-run with people. Did I mention it is right on the beach?
There are Lesser African Flamingoes, Hawaiian Ducks and ornamental Koi Carp adorning the gardens, not to mention and to our great personal amusement, our own local rats of the airways, Sacred Ibis.
Did I mention Penguins? Yes, the highlight of the daily Hilton calendar is feeding a clutch of obese over-confident and very bored penguins. The wild Little Penguins were never like that in Sydney Harbour and Lion Island during my former days as a biologist based in Sydney.
