So I flew SYD > OOL return on the weekend one way in J and the other in Yx it before take off and again after take off each time I asked for water I was handed a bottle instead of the usual glass.

While I still get water and more of it, it seems an interesting change.

I could see the benefits for flight crew, quicker to give out and collect. But it felt like it cheapened the experience.

While on the return flight in Yx I was also handed a water "cup" with the pull off lid. It makes sense in Y to be doing it this way.

I wonder if this is a trial or here to stay. Thoughts?

Doubt it's a trial since it would make no difference to VA cost wise to do that, cheaper to pour a glass in fact. Maybe you were offered the bottle in J as it was close to pushback time? FA didn't have time to pour or similar.

Got both water in a glass and bottled water (close to landing) last week, so don't think it's a trial. It does unfortunately create more waste, but is much more convenient for being able to have water during any phase of flight.

CBR-OOL return on the weekend in J. No bottle of water on the way up (but very attentive crew!). On the way back pre-departure drinks were done then everyone handed a bottle of water as well - which I thought was nice.

I prefer a bottle of water , especially before take off as I can hold it or store it easy without spilling. Normally in a glass they collect before take off and depending on the airport departure could be another 20mins+ before the seatbelt sign is off and crew are available to serve more
