I flew JFK-LAX-MEL in J arriving on Wednesday morning.

The breakfast options are frankly woeful with no cereal or regular bread toast options.

With a small serve of fruit and brioche toast (and Vegemite) the best of a poor lot for breakfast it was served.

Frankly, I am stupid for ordering toast on a plane, it can't be done. Brioche toast is even worse. It is a soft sugary bread that falls apart at the slight touch and with butter that is frozen solid even after several minutes sitting on the originally luke-warm toast it is a total waste of time.

To their credit the FA did later offer to try and find some food from elsewhere but given we were within 90 minutes of landing I was more focussed on getting off the plane.

Having connected from the JFK-LAX flight I didn't eat dinner on the LAX-MEL flight because I went to sleep as soon as possible. I was looking forward to a larger breakfast but once I saw the menu I knew this wasn't possible. However, I literally couldn't stay awake for dinner because it was after 3.00am New York time when we took off.

The self serve food was some sugar glazed biscuits and chocolate which wasn't very nice.

Have others had this problem or is it just me?

Do they still have a hot option for breakfast?

We have regularly had exactly the same issues when we fly home from JFK via LAX...Its really pathetic and Qantas just dont get...AA can serve fantastic bread on their flights so why cant Qantas ??...I often ask for the panini to be kept available until I wake and that is really quite good:)

Was this the 'hanger' menu they give you the night before, and you tick off the things you want? If its the ones I'm used to, then the trouble for me was ordering too much (as just not hungry enough for the things I usually have for breakfast).

And if so, then has this breakfast service been enhanced? I'm still on my crusade against the medium-haul international 'café breakfast'.

What about the in flight snack options - things like Schnitzel, Gnocchi and Calzone are all hot snack items and should be available mid flight.

Sadly, my March menu did not make that obvious and I fell afoul of this:

chance of upgrades QF 23 on 22/12 and QF 24 on 19/1 - FlyerTalk Forums

These were listed as "Small Plates" in a location to indicate being an alternative to the "Main Plates".

There was nothing to indicate on the menu they are available at times later in the flight in addition to a "Main Plate".

I went to sleep as soon as possible, i.e. I changed into the pj's as soon as the seat belt sign went off and slept/snoozed until breakfast was served. Whilst I didn't ask, I doubt if the small plate options would've been available. In any event the FAs were very busy serving the breakfast.

There were hot options but scrambled eggs/meat etc just aren't palatable to me for breakfast.

Yes. it was the hanger menu filled out the night before.

It's easy to miss even now that it is printed on the menu. I didn't notice it when I was on QF12 in April - it was in tiny print and not very clear, and in the dark and the middle of the night I just missed it.

Doesn't explain why the FA told me there was only fruit, icecream or chocolate available as a snack though when I said I was hungry  Perhaps that was because of the aircraft substitution from the A380 to a 747 (being charitable to the FA).

I'm sure trippin_the_rift would prefer if they replaced it with sour dough ;)

That brioche is nasty - I had it MEL-LAX in F last year. But then again the only bread I really like is plain old white bread - preferably Baker's Delight block loaf thick sliced :)

The multi grain roll and ROOM TEMP generous sized German butter on LH in the EU is awesome :-)

Clearly a Neil Perry inspired BreadonQ pre-boarding menu is required to satisfy the kneads of AFF and QF clientele in general. Personally I would like to be able to choose between a selection of French inspired baguettes and inspired artisan sour doughs in F and J, multi and white in W and "please sir may I have some more" in Y.
I am sure of QF implemented this, the bookings would roll in.

Yes agree absolutely. The brioche toast is terrible. Surely Neil Perry's never been served any at 10K m.

i have been told at least on 3 or 4 occasions that those snacks are not available, on SIN-LHR flights.. the only option was the self-serving bar which has basically next to nothing in real food.

so i am not sure if that snack menu actually means anything
