I always thought BNE parking was expensive, now it's confirmed
This article in this morning's Courier Mail

BRISBANE Airport has the most expensive carparking in the world but there's no abuse of market power.

A Productivity Commission report showed Brisbane Airport's average hourly car parking cost is ahead of Sydney and Melbourne, and double that of the travel capitals Paris, Tokyo and Frankfurt.
On a long-term basis, Brisbane also was in front of the other state capitals at $150 a week, compared with $122 in Sydney, $88 in Perth and $77 in Melbourne.
Despite the high cost of pulling up at the airport, the Productivity Commission and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found there had been substantial investment in car parking and prices reflected the "cost of the service".
In the last year, Brisbane Airport Corporation made an average $6151 for every one of its 9767 parking bays, more than any other facility except for Sydney Airport which has nearly 13,000 parking spots.

Australian Airports Association executive director Caroline Wilkie said it was reasonable to expect airports to seek to make a return on their investments.
"Despite insinuations by the ACCC that airports earning money is somehow inappropriate, the Productivity Commission has found that Australian airports' aeronautical charges, revenues, costs, profits and investment are comparable to overseas airports," Ms Wilkie said.
"Airports must make a return on their investment in order to continue to invest in the necessary infrastructure to meet growing consumer demand."
The ACCC scored Brisbane most highly for quality of service, awarding the airport 3.82 out of five, compared with 3.67 for Adelaide, 3.15 for Sydney, 3.01 for Melbourne and 2.61 for Perth.
Leonie Vandeven from the Brisbane Airport Corporation said the higher parking rates reflected the closer proximity of the long-term car park to the terminal and the fact both the long and short-term car parks were fully covered.
In its submission to the Commission, the BAC also argued its parking charges had not increased as rapidly as those in the CBD where motorists pay as much as $70 for more than three hours of parking.
Ms Vandeven said Brisbane's facilities were the "newest, most state-of-the-art of any airport".
A new "public road" for drop-off and pick-up was now open, primarily for the use of private vehicles, she said.

Yep and that is why off site car parking businesses are getting busier and busier in BNE.

The airport is merely a side business to support the parking revenue stream.

For short stays park at DFO and use the airport shuttle. The bus is quite good and has luggage racks.

Brisbane Airport's courtesy bus. It's a complimentary service to transfer you between the International Airport and DFO. The bus runs every 20 minutes between 6:30am and 6:30pm.

Village Bus

A free courtesy bus connects the terminals to the Airport Village shopping precinct. DFO, Woolworths, Dan Murphy's, The Coffee Club, Transit Tavern and other retailers are located here.

Why do they not introduce for the train a cheap ticket for people that go to the airport and return within 3 hrs. That way friends and family can go to the airport and then return at a fair ticket price. If they do not return within 3hrs their card is charged the full amount.

I remember when I was a kid and the carpack was free at Melbourne Airport. Use to go to the airport with my brother just to watch the planes land.

Huh? I've had to park in the open air several times, the most recent (long term) was just back in February! Maybe I should apply for a refund...

I don't actually mind the fees (at least when work's paying!), the carpark is close enough and nice enough that it probably does at least partially justify it.

Why not a cheap airtrain tickets at all times?

I remember paying ~3 Euros in Brussels for the train and the taxi the next morning was close to 50 Euros. I would have gone out to airport with train as well but was running very late.

And Sydney is a joke as well. My father came to pick me up from international a couple of months ago and the first 20 minutes are supposed to be free but only if you are out of there within the first 20 minutes. I got off the aircraft quickly and went through immigration very quickly but then waited an eternity for luggage and quarantine.

We were out of there in about 25 minutes and ended up with no "free" time and the charge is $15 for first hour. The 1/2 hour charge has disappeared.

I can understand why carparking at airports is very expensive as the land around airports is highly sought after for high price housing....

I'd love a house on the swamp of Brisbane airport... Because the mossie noise is louder than 747s.

When you don't have any competition in brisbane, this is the price we will pay. Until a second airport is possible.....
