Gday

New here, so please be considerate.

I require 190 SCs by 31 JUL, to reach silver level:oops:. I know how embarassing, but I'm slowing climbing the ladder eh. Looking for suggestions on the most cost efficient way of reachin the goal. NAN has been referred to many times, but exactly how does that work on FJ?

BTW, received the double points SCs promo email.

Appreciate your views

Welcome pmdg744

For help we are going to need to know where your based, to narrow down the options.

With the NAN I believe that is booked with Qantas, so you end up on QF flights or codeshares.

Welcome to AFF pmdg7444!

as Medhead said, we need to know your starting point to help you work out some ideas.

As you have the double SC offer you really only need something that will normally get you 95 SC's. so you could even do it domestically.

Will you be doing points or points/cash or all cash?

The NAN run is booked on the QF site, you need the route that has all the connections like BNE-MEL-SYD-NAN not the direct flight. pricing has changed but it was about $1300 or so in J. mind you on double SC you'd nearly get to gold.

CBR based.

referring to the double SCs points email, I note it mentions up to 6 weeks for the extra credits to appear. Could members shed some light if this will impact on progress to the next membership level, from your past experience.

eg, mem yr exp 31 Jul, I travel on15 Jul. Under the promo offer, extra points would be awarded in Aug to get across the line. Would this be a fruitless exercise?

SC earn is for the year they are earnt. ie if you fly in July the SCs are for the July year even if they post late.

Agree with prev posters, 190SC with the double SC offer can easily be earned domestically.

However, your original post didn't give an idea of how many points you have in the bank to determine if a YASA or JASA would be worth considering. (ASA = Any seat award, Y or J represents the cabin class - economy is Y, business is J).

I can't remember if the current double SC offer is applicable to domestic travel, so if it does then here's my suggestion:

Book a JASA, flying CBR-MEL-SYD-CBR midweek. This will net 120 SC normally (and 240 SC under the double promo you've received applies to domestic travel) and can be flown in a single day.

Cost: 69,925pts all inclusive, or look at points and pay starts from a maximum of AUD219.11 Cash and minimum 48,000pts.

While the earn rate points wise isn't that high for the routing (only 3,750pts earned) and the aircraft flown aren't the most exciting (737's and 767's), it's pretty much the cheapest and shortest JASA I can think of from your home port which delivers the desired outcome - enough SC's to qualify PS.

Seeing as we’re also talking about JASA’s, how many points do you have to work with? Are you willing to spend your points to get status?

The double SC offer is both Dom and Int on QF flight numbers..

Thank you everyone for your recommendations. ASA however are out of the question as I dont have many points to work with. Frankly I think the points could be better used to obtain upgrades from Y+ to J when available (of course highly debatable @ this forum).

I therefore prefer options which are fully paid by $. So far, to get the 100 SCs minimum (double promo to 200), total cost would be around ~$1000.

Trying to figure out ways to reach that target for a far lesser amount (~700 $). Do you guys think that would be a reasonable figure?

Not to rain on your parade, but putting it into perspective... Silver qualification is 300SC. If you need 190SC to qualify, then wouldn't that put you on 110SC at the moment? Is there a specific priviledge at the PS level that is of great benefit to you, that would outweigh the upfront cash cost of obtaining the status in the next couple of months? Would a QP membership instead be a better option?

Fair point. Reason I'm doing this is that I'm trying to aim for Gold within the next yr. I figure that if do nothing by 31 JUL and let the membership year lapse, I 'waste' 110 SCs and start from 0 all over again.

However, if I scrape over the line to PS, I have a full membership year to enjoy the main PS benefit of the now 50% points bonus, and free advanced seat selection, and hopefully do enough to get SG. The saving grace from all this is the double offer on now, otherwise all this wouldn't be worthy of consideration.

I don't think it's worth it. Either way, you are going to 'waste' all the Status Credits you earned getting to Silver, as you still need to earn 700 status credits to get Gold next year (ie earn enough to retain Silver (250) then another 450 to get to 700 and earn Gold. The 50% points uplift does not help in any way, other than *perhaps* giving you enough points to buy an ASA. Points do not equal status credits.

I'd be paying for membership of AFF, and then joining Qantas Club using the discounted membership available from here.

This is how I see it, having PS status and flying only domestic is pretty much useless.

Yes the new 50% status bonus is great ONLY if you start flying long flights ... think anywhere over 4 hours, anything less .... literally earns zero bonus.

Seat selection? Hmmmmm if I am flying domestic I am not fussed where I sit. I have my preferences but on short flights, it does not concern me. When flying international, seat selection is a bonus but paying for an exit row (with or without status) is better! Many airlines offer the abilty to purchase exit row seats so you don't really need to stick to Qantas, if you don't need to :)

You have to remember that at the start of your membership year, which is 1 August, your status credits resets to 0 regardless of which status you had on or before 31 July.

In that case, personally, I would probably write off this year's SC, and then plan for a big trip/run early in the next qualification year, and try to get to that 300SC quickly. I would then have PS to enjoy for the rest of the year, plus the next if I don't make SG. I would also have the rest of the year to move towards SG, and, depending on how things turn out, may consider another run towards the end of the qualification year to reach it. I'm not saying that your way is wrong - just that this would be my way to do things if I'm in this situation.

A very good point.

Yeah the silver benefits aren't that great. Sure they are better than bronze. But not really worth it if you have to spend a lot of extra dollars to get.

Seat selection for silver is quite limited on full flights. On a lot of flights you will only be able to pick from the back half of the airplane. The more forward seats can only be preselected by higher status. 3 or 4 days before the flight you get a chance of selecting exit row seats, provided they haven't already been purchased directly or claimed by a higher status person.

The silver points bonus are not that useful domestically. As short trips (SYD-MEL, SYD-BNE) still fall under the 1000 point minimum guarantee. So bronze and silver will earn the exact same points. Even on BNE-MEL silver only gets an extra 289 points over bronze. You really have to be flying international before the bonus gives a real bonus.

As others have said write off this year. And start your next membership year quickly. In no time you'll be up to silver.
