I have the opportunity to fly often internally within the USA as we also have a business and house there as well as Sydney. I want to achieve Gold status with Qantas, as soon as possible and I am intending to fly several places in the USA to gain the status credits for these flights. After research it appears the most economical way (although more time consuming) is to take indirect flights, for example LAX to DFW to JFK and then PHL (Philadelphia) for about the same cost as a direct LAX to PHL flight. As a rule of thumb, about $350 to $380 AU will get you 100 status credits. I am new to this forum, but it would seem that this is a better way to accumulate status credit with Qantas, rather than flying within Australia. Is this correct? (I am not interested in this stage with ff miles) Thank you in advance for your advice.

Welcome, kempvet.

The issue with crediting to QF when flying on AA in economy is that not all fare types earn SCs (or FF miles). For example, O class bookings with AA earn donuts.

See here.

I would be surprised if AUD400 would get you 100 SCs when flying economy with AA.

Don't forget the QF requirement to have at least four QF sectors in any one membership year in order to earn any QF status.

THANKS!
This is EXACTLY the information I need to make decisions, one of the main reason why I want to be a Gold Qantas FF, is to be able to access the oneworld lounges when I am not flying BA, AA or Qantas and flying on a oneworld partner airline (Traveling with a partner and an infant we need the comfort of these lounges).
