Hi

I'm just throwing this out there.

Wife and I are planning a visit to Ireland later in the year (probably 1-Sep to 31-Oct-23).

I'd like to do the long haul (read overnight) in business class to get the sleeping beds - happy to do the daytime flights in cattle class.

Obviously prices are quite high at the moment, byt hoping they will reduce in the new year. Looking for advice from the more seasoneed o/s travellers as to the best place to be able to get a handle on good deals as they arise.

Cheers

I would subscribe to the cheap airfares forum here on AFF. You’ll be notified of any specials when they arise.

You have several options… either business class all the way from Australia… in which case you’re looking at around $5000 for a lead-in price on vietnam airlines to london, paris or frankfurt… or you can pay or cash in miles to fly somewhere like Bali, Jakarta, Singapore or Bangkok to pick up business class from one of those gateways.

You should expect to pay somewhere between $2500-$3000 return business class from Asia.

Getting to ireland might be tricky, so think about the major gateways in europe like london, paris or frankfurt, buying a separate ticket from those cities to Ireland. Leave plenty of connecting time! (a full day even better)

Again AFF’s cheap airfare forum is good for the deals ex Asia.

Also, where are you starting from in Oz?

What strategy might be to get to Asia on “day flights” - hard to do with QF (they usually have a red eye home) but it’s possible to book SQ return on day flights. From there seperate J tickets to DUB or elsewhere in Europe. It would be sensible / safer to have some stopovers on either end.

marchredmr, Consider this precis

I know people that fly VN J class; they are well travelled and think it's excellent value.

I always look at what I am spending per hour and calculate my pain point - i.e. the walkway line.

Most of us work hard for our money, so it's important to get the value right.

@MEL_Traveller - Thank you, I have now subscribed ... I had seen suggestions that flying to Asia and picking up Y Class seats from there is a good option ... will def consider

@SYD - we are starting out from Canberra, so departure point from Oz is, to some extent, moot. Are considering leaving from Perth - taking the opportunity to spend some time there before heading out. Certainly understand the 'red eyes' home, but heading out on day flight to Asia is certainly an option.

@Sprucegoose - Have actually flown VN and founs d them to be a good airline ... so would certainly consider J with them

PER to Asia is actually a good repositioning option. QF PER-SIN return are both shortish day flights. The trip back lands late but hotel o/n and head east next day. I managed to get SIN-PER-SYD as a reward flight.

Flying to Asia economy and picking up *business* from there! Business class fares are around $2500-$3000 from asia to europe return.
Closer to $3.5k to $4k depending which airlines ones happy to fly. BKK and CGK being standout stepping off points at the moment.

I’m thinking more of the special fares. At $4k better off flying from Australia for $5k all the way.

Read the posts re Philippine Airlines' 'quick or you'll miss it' seat sale until 1 January 2023.

Excellent airline, and as discussed there combine with a Middle Eastern one from MNL to get great value J all the way. My travel agent books the two tickets separately, and wise to have a couple of nights in MNL to be sure you connect, with three nights even better. Hotels are in all price brackets as Manila is a megacity, far larger than Sydney or Melbourne.
