Dear All
A newbie so please ignore my lack of knowledge.
Is it my methods or are there no business seats out of Melbourne to Singapore or Hong Kong direct.I think I am doing all the right things by looking 12 months in advance but Qantas seem to offer none except the odd one thru Syd or Bris. It is fine onward to the UK with BA offering a fair selection but Qantas are less than generous. Are they saving themselves for this July thing and trying to get our points balances down?

I just checked 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks from today and for approx 3.5K you can buy a J seat to SIN on near every flight ex MEL. If you are trying to get that J seat on FF points, forget it, even Platinum members such as myself are finding it tough (but not impossible) to get reward seats for the exact flight and date we want.

Incase you dont know, after Platinum gets their choice, then comes gold, then QC, then silver and finally bronze members.

Sorry but this is how it works

Good luck!!

Danger UXB,

Qantas operate direct flights

MEL - HKG QF 29 at 2250 and
HKG - MEL QF 30 at 0900
MEL - SIN QF 9 at 1530 and
SIN - MEL QF 10 at 1945

I've looked these up for early August with availability for paid tickets but points are another issue. I'm not sure which you are after.

Had a quick look and I can see direct awards every Tues, wed for April and back on Monday or Tuesday in april, may 2009.Looks like plenty of availability coming back via Sydney. You can always ring and see if other availability-Certainly found that the way to go recently booking my wife BNE-NRT in U

thanks for the replies.
I am after points flights and it sounds like I am not alone , even the plat QFF's find it tough. But the question remains why so many opertunities with BA and none on qantas? I have a SINto LHR in F on BA for 3 people on points in late APR 09 but only Yseats on Qantas to get to SIN and this is travelling mid week. Yes I am very flexible with my dates.

Cathay Pacific have 3 x daily services between MEL and HKG. But, CX award seats do not show on-line on the QF FF site so you need to phone Qantas FF and ask them for availability on CX flights to HKG.

BA is not really a preferred carrier for most Australians if Qantas also flies the route. So BA tends to have lots of free seats in premium cabins, thus is able to offer more award redemptions than Qantas can.

There is business class availabilty on QF9 on 15,16,23 April 2009 and first class availability on QF9 on 14,15,16,21,22,23,28,29,30 April 2009. I think you will find it difficult to get 3 business class seats released on the one flight and if that is your expectation then I think your criticism is a little unfair.

Why not connect through SYD, BNE, ADL or PER? I think the points cost is still the same.

Yes OK I was probably being a bit harsh. I am just probably a bit cheesed that BA dont fly to Mel anymore and therefore the vast quantities of reward seats they offer are not available without flying to Sydney (and associated terminal change) and the extra time approx 4-5 hours on a good day just to get a comfy seat for a 7 hour trip. I am however looking forward to the BA first class on the long leg to London and hopefully the same on return. Thanks to all the respondants and I promise to make my next post alitttle clearer.
