We are a family of 2 adults and 2 children flying from Nadi to Los Angeles next week in economy class on Fiji Airways. Our seats were redeemed through QF FF points.

Has anyone ever requested to pay locally for an upgrade to business class on this flight upon check–in and if so what was the charge? Or has anyone had a similar request on different flight/airline and what was the outcome?

I'd doubt very much any Airline would allow an "award booking" to then pay to upgrade.

I once made an enquiry at PPT about upgrading a paid Y fare on a QF codeshare on TN, because there was a sign on the check in desk that said paid upgrades could be requested. The response was that the sign only applied to TN flight numbers and that on a QF codeshare, QF would require the entire itinerary to be recalculated as a J fare before I could pay to sit in J - including recalculating the sectors that I had already flown in Y.

So I didn't go ahead.

I've paid for Y->J on Air Pacific (before it was renamed to Fiji Airways) on a flight from NAN-SYD. It was FJ$300 from memory.

That was a few years ago though so I'm not sure what if they still allow it.

I think it's going to depend on the type of upgrade available.

if there's a sign at check-in offering set price upgrades (ie to fill seats, or because they're over booked in economy) you may be in luck.

If there is no such offer, and you want to upgrade by paying the full fare difference - that's unlikely to be possible.

Was that a paid ticket to begin with though vs award ticket?

Can't say I blame you.

If it's an award ticket it's unlikely to be booked as a QF codeshare so was probably sold as a FJ marketed flight.

The $64K question is whether the FJ check in people at NAN will treat an award ticket in whY any differently to a paid ticket when it comes to paid upgrades to J at the airport.

I paid for an upgrade at the airport to J on FJ from SYD-NAN and return. There were no signs up, I had just heard it was possible so asked at the counter. This was on a paid fare though.

On that flight it was $700 or so. I've just had a look on their website and have upgrade from NAN-LAX listed as $2580FJD for adults and $1940FJD for children. I guess it's just luck as to whether they let you pay for an upgrade on a fare purchased with FF points. Good luck!

Welcome to AFF ronlon, sounds like it may be a long shot from your replies so far - it would be really good if you let us know how you went
