Someone tell me where my maths is wrong.

I can buy 100,000 Velocity points for $2,340. I can then convert these into 64,517 Krisflyer points.

To earn that many Krislfyer points through AMEX rewards, I'd need 193,551 Amex award points. Which means spending about $150k on Amex to get the equivalent points through Amex..Why are Velocity points so much cheaper in comparison?

It's not a fair comparison. With that $150k you're spending on Amex, you're receiving the goods and services you pay for PLUS Amex points.

Acquiring points from buying them outright is totally different from acquiring points from spending on credit cards.

If you want to avoid all that messy business of buying $150k worth of stuff, KF sell miles at 4 US cents a pop, if you can convince them to sell them to you , or it offers up the option when you go through the redemption process.

Would still work out to be about ~$3,800AUD.

I'm not overly familiar with the SQ Krisflyer rules, but is buying points the same as earnt from flying? And what is the mile requirement for Krisflyer gold?

As with just about every other FF programme (Qantas Points Club is the only exception I can think of), you won't make the mile requirement for status from reward seat flights.

The requirements for attaining Gold are below.

Not reward seats, I'm meaning just simply buying miles. I know I'm missing something here, because surely I can't just buy 50k miles and get to Gold status?

You're confusing KrisFlyer Miles with Elite Miles. KrisFlyer Miles are frequent flyer points. Elite Miles are what other airlines call status credits. You can buy KrisFlyer Miles. You can't buy Elite Miles.

Ah thank you, that's the obvious part I was missing.
