How are miles towards elite upgrades counted? Actual miles, or does it depend on fare class?

If I book an O class fare on QF, I know that the points earning is 0.5 per mile, but I wasn't sure whether it's the actual miles or the x 0.5 that counts towards elite upgrades.

Thanks

Actual miles.From T&Cs-
"Elite Status Miles or Segments
Qualifying miles or segments are the actual miles or segments you earn on eligible purchased tickets for flights aboard American Airlines, American Eagle, AmericanConnection, AAdvantage participant airlines and/or American Airlines codeshare flights (ticket must reflect an American Airlines coded flight number), including applicable minimum mileage guarantees. "
QF is an Aadvantage participant airline.

Thanks, but I'm not sure that's answering my question.

It is the miles earned

For an eligable discount economy ticket ( < K ) it will be the higher of 500 miles or 50% of miles flown
For other tickets it will be the higher of 500 miles or miles flown

To specifically answer the question, it's "Qualifying Base Miles":
AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Gold members earn four (4) 500-mile upgrades for every 10,000 qualifying base miles earned during the membership year.
So, for a 7,491 mile O class flight on a QF flight number SYD-LAX credited to AAdvantage:
  • A non status member would earn:
    • 3,746 Redeemable Miles
    • 3,746 Qualifying Base Miles &
    • 1,873 Qualifying Base Points
  • A Platinum AAdvantage member would earn:
    • 7,491 Redeemable Miles
    • 3,746 Qualifying Base Miles &
    • 1,873 Qualifying Base Points
In both cases it's the 3,746 Qualifying Base Miles that count toward the complimentary "500" mile upgrade tally.

N.B. an Executive Platinum does not earn complimentary "500" mile upgrades.
