Just wondering if anyone knew whether I could use my FF points to buy a ticket from Sydney to say Bali or Fiji (or maybe Queensland) for my daughter's boyfriend? We would also get one for my daughter but she is a FF member anyway and as our daughter I gather that this is within rules. We wouldn't be travelling with them. If we did with that make a difference? We have points with Qantas and also Velocity rewards.
Would love to hear back from anyone who may know and also any tips of how to get around the rules if we can't do it. Like pretending they are engaged???;)
Thanks in advance.

Unless things have changed in very recent times, the answer is Yes You Can!

I have both purchased fares and also used my points to upgrade someone (the latter requires some ingenuity at describing your relationship from the menu supplied). Just use the login as normal, seelct the trip, and you are asked whether you are the passenger or not - just type in the name.

Alternatively, transfer the points to your daughter and she can buy two tickets on her QFF - and then the two tickets are linked straight away.

Happy booking!

Thanks jetlagged. The problem is that 'Daughter's boyfriend' isn't on the relationship to passenger list- only son-in-law (and 'daughter' of course). Don't want to click that unless they want proof! They are only 18 so probably won't believe it. Also if they don't let me I don't want to have to cancel my daughter's flight and then lose points. I would have thought that Virgin would be cool with the boyfriend thing but can't find it in their info.

mummahen,

Welcome to AFF.

JetLagged has summed it up pretty well.

Unless something has changed in the process very recently there is no issue.

Nina, I just did a dummy booking on the Qantas site - logged in with my QFF details, chose the flights, then when it came to the 'Passenger' section, I simply changed the details of the person flying.

As long as your daughter's boyfriend has photo ID, he can claim the E-ticket etc.

All in all, no hassles.

Thanks guys. That'll be a cool Xmas present for two poor students!
This looks like an interesting site.
Have a great night.
Nina

Welcome to AFF mummahen,

I'd say go for it!

Son-in-law is close enough if booking under your account, the list is huge anyway:mrgreen:, 99.999% chance that Qantas staff won't bat an eyelid at Check-in time

Assuming that you actually see QF staff at checkin ie not OLCI with no bags, all they care about is that you've got some photo ID to match the name the booking is in.

They wouldn't be quizzing you on the bonafides of who is who in the zoo with the redemption. If the booking has already been completed then it's a done deal & no further verification is necessary.

Unless someone looks into the Amadeus pnr it wouldn't be immediately obvious whose points were used for the ff redemption booking anyway.

We've made bookings using points accrued through a work AMEX for other staff who are completely unrelated, and this was following advice from the Qantas help desk. The Qantas guy actually said to me, "Are you sure Mr. X isn't your 'brother In-Law'??? I took the hint and booked it.

Good point OZ. My wife was was booked to fly on a red e deal with me and couldn't, I thought at the time giving her ticket to my father who was now flying with us.

How would it look to boarding staff that Mrs Spruce was in fact an aging man!

On that occasion I didn't risk it but did toy with the idea

Cheers Spruce

I really dont think QF are that concerned given they make money on redemptions, IMHO the restrictions on family transfers were only put in place to stop frequent point transfers to keep them current, which is not not an issue anyway.

Heaps of people put the wrong title title when they do the booking eg Jane Brown does a booking for herself but accidentally uses the salutation "Mr" as I think it's the first option on the drop down menu.

Spruce, maybe the ageing man accidentally used "Mrs" incorrectly as the salutation when making the booking.

If Spruce Senior did OLCI no bags (or maybe you were the only one travelling with checked luggage ;) ) the only time airline staff may say something is at the boarding gate when the FA scans the boarding pass & the pax name comes up as the name of your missus.

I guess it's one thing to err with the gender or title of the pax but not sure what the reaction would be if the male pax boarding had the first name of a lady?

I guess at the time of booking you could just put in an initial rather than pax entire first name if you thought there was a chance Mrs Spruce may not be travelling.
