Can i take a box of mangoes as separate checked baggage?

Years ago, i remember i could check in a box of mangoes separate to my main suitcase when flying with Qantas. They just directed me elsewhere to drop it off.

Now with stricter baggage rules, can I still check in both separate items without being penalised?

I don't want to put it in my suitcase as they won't know there are mangoes inside. Or will they survive the journey?

I should also mention the ticket was issued in Jan if it means anything.

Taking fruit is no concern to HK. I just want to know if Qantas will charge me more if i check in a box of mangoes

According to QF website, you are only entitled to 1 piece of luggage up to 23kg as ticket was issued before 26 Feb 2013. If you'd bought the ticket after that date, you would have been entitled to 30kg spread across multiple pieces of luggage.
