I'm travelling MEL/SYD/DFW/YVR on QF420/QF007/AA364 and would like to know whether my luggage can be checked in at Melbourne all the way to Vancouver or will I have to collect it in Dallas after my Qantas leg and recheck in from there to Vancouver? Thanks.

While your luggage can be tagged to YVR, you will still need to collect it at DFW and clear customs with your bags and the re-check them after customs at DFW. All bags must be collected and escorted through customs at your first point of entry in the USA - even if you are just transiting the USA enroute to another country.

Fortunately this is relatively simple.

Your bags will be tagged through to YVR from MEL. (Use the "Domestic Connection to International" counters.

After arrival into DFW and you have been processed by USA Immigration¹ you proceed downstairs to collect your bags. You pass through custom and then look for the signs for the "Bag Drop for transit" passengers and simply redosit to the conveyors.

Proceed out, look at the monitors for the gate your YVR flight is departing from and head back though security.

¹ This can take 45 minutes or more.

I'll be returning from Dallas to Melbourne via Brisbane on QF008/QF611. Presumably can check my luggage all the way thru to MEL but clear custom at BNE.

You'll still need to collect your luggage at BNE before clearing customs. After doing so and exiting the secure area to the right and head to the far corner of the arrivals hall to recheck your bags there at the special Qantas counters.

You then go outside to await the "T-Bus" for Domestic that departs every 20 minutes that time of day.
