If there are no business reward seats when they are release, if I buy a PE reward seat and a business one later comes available, can I exchange directly over the phone? Or do I need to arches the new business one and get a refund on the PE one as separate transactions? Need to know as an exchange would hopefully allow me to just add the extra points(22000) but the former requires me to have spare 94000 before I get the 72000 refunded back?

Ive purchased PE and later upgraded when availability opened up before. You can waitlist your booking for a points upgrade when available or phone customer service asap once you see it available.

Note that only SG & WP are allowed to use points upgrade on long haul.

Edit: Opps. Just noticed youre talking about a reward PE seat and exchanging for a reward J seat. Sorry, I should read things twice today before commenting.

I've done so when changing dates of flights - had to cancel the original reward flight and book the new one, and they did it over the phone (it was only the taxes which didn't refund immediately).

It can be done. The fee is 5000 points or $60 pp. you can do it by phone.
