Cancel DJs Amex before activation to avoid annual fee?

DJ's had an offer that gave the offeror 60K points and the offeree (me) 40K points with $295 fee. The offeror has received their points but I have not yet activated my card. Does anyone know if I can cancel my card before activation and avoid the $295 annual fee?

The annual fee is charged at the end of the first statement (in my experience) so cancelling the card before then should avoid the fee.

Or the short answer, yes.
