I need urgent help.

My father just turned 80 and i booked the following flights for him to fly alone while i am in another country.
August 31 from Sydney to Hong Kong - Taken and arrived
September 1 - His flight should be from Hong Kong to Rome Via Helsinki on AY100 on the 1st september but his flight was cancelled to the 5th.

This is impossible for my father to stay 4 extra nights in Hong Kong alone. Can someone please help direct me to the Platinum line in Hobart, I urgently need help.

There’s a typhoon heading towards HKG so all flights are cancelled. Mind you, Qantas should assist with accommodation.

EDIT - the perils of posting bleary eyed in the morning - Princess Fiona is correct - if the flight's been released to Finnair, they should be helping.

Qantas has said this is finnair responsibility, i urgently need to speak to someone in hobart or a manager.

Without wanting to be unhelpful, what are you expecting Qantas to do if all flights out of HKG have been cancelled due to a typhoon?

The best that can be done is accommodation, which as others have said, you should contact Finnair for help with.

Slight update:

I found out about typhoon from here, thank you. 2 hours on the phone to Makati call centre gave me no glimpse of any weather condition.

As soon as i read here that the issue was weather related, i quickly cancelled our Airbnb in rome, booked 4 more nights in a hotel in HK (Not the crowne plaza) and accepted the flight changes from finnair (Booking J on eva air).

Few points on this.

1) Qantas rep was as i expected coming out of a manila call centre, absolutely zero information at all
2) Finnair rep was amazing, told me about the typhoon and advised Finnair booked me on True J with eva air on the 5th and most people were rebooked to the 20th.

This could have been dealt with much better if Q-CSR was informed and informed myself.

Thanks to those who assisted here

Considering Manila is feeling the effects of the very same typhoon they should have known better.

Edit: I should probably give the Manila agents some slack. It may have been a struggle for them to get into work today with the rain, floods and reduced public transport.

Hope your Dad is okay @celsioraus and that things return to normal for all concerned- and he gets to fly on Tuesday.

Are other AFF's caught up in the closure of HKIA?
I am keen to hear how you have fared with the disruption, as we are due out Tuesday on CX CR J flights.

I checked him out of crowne plaza and into best western 200m down the road and for now booked in J to Rome for the 5th. I do see another typhoon coming for Taiwan which is his stop over so i hope nothing happens there.

Does anyone know if finnair will pay hotel compensation? I saw the EU rules exclude weather events so i am guessing not.

I don't think airlines compensate for weather related issues but instead directs you to travel insurance. Some might as gestures of goodwill.

Under EU261 ‘bad weather’ in and of itself does not necessarily qualify as ‘extraordinary circumstances’.

However, in this case, because the airport has been closed, and this is a decision external to the airline - over which it has no control - it will possibly be excluded.

Ordinarily if a flight is cancelled or delayed due to weather you would be entitled to accommodation and food.

The other complication here is Finnair. We saw a very unfortunate case on AFF where finnair played hardball on a case which should have given compensation. It ended up costing the passenger thousands of dollars after the claims company went bankrupt but finnair pressed for court fees :(
