Hi everyone,

I put a wrong surname for my daughter on a reward booking (emirates). I've been advised by Qantas to cancel and re-book.

I am concerned that booking isn't guaranteed to be available again (heard the rumours on the forums here). Is it worth giving Emirates a call to fix?

Thank you so much

The problem is EK won't be able to do anything for you because you're booking via QF with QFF points. You're really relying on the ability of QF to rebook this for you. Can you still see reward seat(s) on the flights in question? if so then should be fine, if not then that's a different question..

When was the booking made? If the booking was made today (I'm assuming so given your post time?) then read this link https://www.qantas.com/au/en/manage-booking/same-day-no-mistake.html

wrong surname for my daughter
Is the whole surname incorrect or there is a spelling mistake in the surname?

Below is something that I found out via Google Search for name correction (so not sure how up to date or relevant this is);

For Qantas codeshare and/or interline flights, including Emirates flights, where the same booking class is unavailable, book from current availability and issue the ticket as per the current fare rules <redacted some info here>

For name change, Name changes on Qantas (081) international tickets are not permitted.

Agree. If you can tell the flight number, city pair & date, class of travel - we can see if there are reward seats available?

There is availability for one person but the booking is for 2. I was also advised to have the booking split and just rebook my daughter but I said no because I can't book a single child ticket online.

The whole surname is incorrect unfortunately. I booked a week ago and called up today.

OK well you'd need QF to split the booking and they would have to book the ticket for you. Of course then having separate tickets for yourself and a child is far from ideal for many reasons.

You may have to take the gamble to cancel and hope that you get the two seats back in inventory to rebook it properly.

Why not call QF and ask them to split & book the daughter on a separate PNR and link with the old PNR? You can say that you needed the call centre staff to do this because (from what I know), pax can't link PNRs online by themselves.

Yes, could split and rebook the child, the call centre can then link the bookings so it doesn’t look like the child is unaccompanied.

Thanks that sounds like a plan.

I did actually ask for them to book for me then merge the tickets but agent said they couldn't see the availability that I could see...

I'll try a few more times with a few more calls but yeh I'll gamble with a cancel and re-book if no luck on the phone.

"linking" of bookings only does so much.. and that's not a lot. I mean there's no guarantee that the child's booking will be able to be seated next to the adult, or that one or the other may not be disrupted with irrops etc. This is the problem. Now it may also be a factor depending on the age of the child (a 5yo vs a 15yo) but it's still not ideal imo.

Another thought comes to mind - while both EK and QF use Amadeus which helps if EK honor / recognise the "link" or not may be an concern (I have no info one way or the other on this - it just comes to mind as maybe a possibility)

Not being seated together is problem given daughter is 2 years old. But I would have left it to be a problem to solved after the ticket is sorted?

What do you mean disrupted with irrops etc.?

Oh at two years old you need her on the same booking. No question in my view.

What I mean by being disrupted is that say there are issues with flight cancellations or delays or whatevr (irregular operations=irrops) - a "link" is of limited value as essentially the two separate bookings MAY be treated as two unrelated passengers (yes, a two year old should be flagged appropriately).. point being that then the two pax may be separated either seating wise (if a aircraft change happens) or even on different flights (in an extreme situation - but this HAS happened to people in the past). Unlikely yes, but not impossible.

I'm not trying to scare you or say these things WOULD happen but there is a chance they could and honestly *I* would not take that chance, specially with such a young child (a teenager possibly would be more than happy to be separated from a parent and potentially could handle things differently). I just would not take the chance of having a child on a separate booking in this way - even with a "link"

others may have a different view, but it's not something I'd do.

Thanks that is helpful - I didn't know the link is so soft and that it might cause me issues later on.
