Howdy,

I booked a return Adl-Mel classic economy flight for 22,000 points about 8 weeks ago, for January.

I now realise this is a stupid idea, and would prefer to save it up for a RTW trip / international flight / international upgrade.

I have around 15k points, so, if I refunded I'd have between 35,000 and 40,000 points, which is well on the way to an international flight.

So, I'm considering cancelling the classic award.

Current cost 22,000 points. Value at approx 1.5c = $330 cost.

OR:
Option 2:
Take 5,000 point cost to cancel
Re-book at $89 each way
Get 2,000 points
+20 SC

Cost
3,000 points at 1.5c = $45
+$89 + $89 =$223 (but, with 20 SC - which, whilst not much, is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick). Thus, a saving of $107.

Further,
If 1point = 1c
Option 1 = $220.
Option 2 = $89+$89+$30 = $208..... so, still works out $12 better (worst case!).

HOWEVER, my question is as follows:
My Classic Award is a return Adl-Mel flight... when I cancel, will I be slugged 5,000 points for each flight, or 5,000 for the whole booking?

(Also, if anyone spots any errors in my maths, feel free to let me know :))

Cheers

I believe it is 5000 points per passenger (per booking, not per flight).

Yep per PAX per booking.

Did you pay the Taxes/levies/charges with points? MEL-ADL round trip starts from 16000 +++.

1. thanks both.

2. yes, so, 16k+ 6k fees

EDIT:-> Sigh, fail plan is fail.

Return flight is $169 (there is only one on that day that is $89) instead of $89 (I need THAT specific flight, due to traveling with a companion).

At 1.5c, that is only a saving of $27, and at 1c that is a loss of $83.

Not worth changing it.

Thanks anyway

Alrite, now, time to baby me...

Qan have dropped the return flight to $89.... so, it's back to the 'worth it' store....

BUT, when I go to cancel, it says '
[h=1]Total Price[/h] Total: $53.18 (AUD)'

What does that mean? I just want to cancel my Award flight... why would it cost $53.18? Is that the 'refund' value of the voucher I'll get? I just thought I'd get back 22,000 points I booked with less 5,000 charge for canceling...

Will it cost me $53.18, instead of 5,000 points?

//confused.

When I go to 'change' instead of cancel (I need to cancel, as I want to go from Award booking to cash fare) the change fee is only 3,500... I expected it to be 5,000.

STOP - do not pass go, do not collect [-]$200[/-] $53.18.

That online behaviour is representative of cancelling an ASA award, not a Classic award.

RU sure 'tis a classic?

I was sure... but, I guess not.

Someone else was surprised that it was 22,000 points return...

Hmm.

Alright.

So if it is a YASA... what does that mean? If I cancel it, I'll only get $53.18 back?

No. More than likely, you'll get a $53 credit towards another booking. If the rebooking fee is over $53 it could cost you more to use it.

I suggest you bring the booking back up on Qantas.com and check the the fare rules. I have this feeling you may need to stick with the booking. At least you'll get QFF point and SC's if that's the case.

Here's a sample (on an 11000 point one way booking).

Going by that you have a classic award. I assume you paid the surcharges using points, getting it from 16K to 22K.

I am not certian about the cancellation of such a booking as I'd never use point for taxes/levies/surcharges, so have no experience. But reading the rules still indicates you'll get the original points less than5K returned.

Have you checked the QFF T&C's? It seems to me that if you wish to do cancel, then cancelling over the phone and taking the 5K points penalty is the way to go.

Hmm, I was quite sure that I did book a Classic award flight, paying the surcharge with points.

Something I've learned not to do since joining this forum :)

It does seem somewhat weird, as I can't see why there would be a 'price' of $53.18 to cancel a classic award booking...

Sooooo, all in all..... anyone have any idea?

What happens when *YOU* try to cancel an award flight? Does an amount appear to be a 'cost' of cancelling (mine is just over $50)....??

What you have is outside the experience of most members here.

I really think you'll need to call and ask to cancel there - don't do it online.

DO NOT mention the $50 - just assume to the agent you'll get your points back less 5K.

Not quite sure about your question but last time I cancelled a classic award it cost 5000 QFFF points per person cancelled.
