Hi,

I need to cancel a classic award.

What i'm wondering and can't seem to work out, is whether i'll get the charges and taxes of $350ish refunded to my credit card or lost into the ether?

Any experiences?

Here's the terms and conditions part about cancelling, all i can see is that i'll lose 5,000 points per passenger(from the fee schedule), but nothing about the taxes and charges part.
Am i missing something obvious?

Qantas said:
14.8 Qantas & Partner Classic Awards - tickets cancellation & refunds
14.8.1 Classic Award tickets issued for travel on Qantas, oneworld Alliance Airlines or Airline Partners (other than Jetstar Asia (3K) or Valuair (VF) or Itinerary confirmations on flights operated by Jetstar Asia (3K) or Valuair (VF) may be submitted for refund and re-credit prior to commencement of travel. Where applicable, only Points that would not have expired will be re-credited. A Cancellation Refund Fee (see the Fee Schedule) will apply.
14.8.2 Once travel has commenced on a Classic Award, the Award is considered used, even if the remaining travel is not completed. Points will not be re-credited to the Member's account for unused ticket coupons.
14.8.3 If a Classic Award is cancelled by the airline and reasonable alternative travel cannot be arranged, Qantas will waive the Cancellation Refund Fee on any Classic Award submitted for refund and will re-credit the applicable number of Points.

You will be stung a 5000 pt fee but all T/L/C are refunded to the CC.

The re-credit of points generally shows as two transactions - a full refund of the original points :D and a 5000 pt 'fee' :(.

They may quote 6 weeks for the $$$ re-credit but it seems to take up to one week. (However, more than once I have had to make a 'phone call after 6 weeks.)

Thanks for that serfty! The answer I was hoping for!

I note I can cancel online, do you reckon it'd be better to ring or is the online facility up to the task?

I cancelled a QF classic award as well as a JASA. I cancelled by phone. In both cases, points were returned to my account in a day or two as were my CC charges. They were also in a hurry to retain 5 000 points for each booking.

They sound like they're still getting it wrong. The 5,000 cancel fee for the classic is right, but they shouldn't have charged you the 5,000 for cancelling the JASA. The JASA is a cash fare paid for with points, so it has the fare conditions of a cash fare. And you will never be slugged 5,000 points for cancelling a fare paid for with cash... QF need to invest in a little bit of training for their call centres.

I'll try online and report back with the results

Cancelled online, credited the full points then debited the cancellation points within the next 24 hours. The charges/taxes were refunded to my CC within 3 days.
