Wondering if anyone has had experience of hiring a small automatic car one way from Italy to France. My research suggests that Orvieto or Chiusi in Italy (accessible via train from Rome so to secape the crazy driving there) is a good place to begin in Italy and we have chosen to finish in Reims France so we can catch the train into Paris.

Thing is asking for a one way small auto is costing a small fortune ~ $2500AUD and thats from the companies that allow a cross border trip and actually have an auto!

I know a manual is far cheaper but I have done two trips in the French countryside one in a manual and one in an auto, and I have to say the auto is far more enjoyable in that you only need to focus on driving on the right handside. Its a different story changing gears on the right side as well .

Appreciate any suggestions, even if it's from those that suggest seeking out a place on the border to change cars ( we are intending to do Tuscany and then onto Provence)

You're looking at probably the two hardest countries in the world to get an auto car!

The one-way fees are often terrible. Have you tried dividing into two rentals both terminating within the same country?

We looked at Milan --> Nice and found it cheaper to Rent Milan --> San Remo --> Train over border --> Nice-Nice. There was still a one-way fee but cost far less and opened more options for companies with which to use.

Although in the end we did the whole lot by train anyway!

thanks docjames, it may have to come to that ( it was about a $1000 premium with one crowd)

IIRC it reduced from circa 1000 euros oneway italy to france to ~ 200 euros one way italy --> Italy....

We had an auto from Rome to Milan; booking through Expedia was the only way to get a price that didnt break the bank.

thanks blackcat and docjames, will be investigating these,

by the way docjames, whats an IIRC

Depends how long you want it for, but what about picking up a Peugeot through the Open Europe scheme in southern France, hoon down to your start point in Italy as fast as you can, then take your time getting back up to France.

yes that would have been good but we are flying into Rome and the age of hooning has long passed :)

Pity :) Well, you can pick up those cars outside of France as well but of course there's an extra fee. Still might be worth getting a quote.

There is a link (some where on this forum) where you you hire a car at point A to return it on a one way deal to Point B, its city of origin. I will have a search in my records to see of I can find it, and post for you.

How long is your rental?

We are driving from Rome to Paris, and rented through Hertz (booked with Amex Plat Travel). Total rental is $869 Euro for 8 days, mid-size SUV, including the drop fee.

That's a pretty good price given the locations.

Dec 15/Jan 16 we hired thru Hertz an Audi A6 (morphed into Volvo V60 with sat nav) 12 days for €851 all up.... picked up Rome > dropped Milan
