Big Island. Yes hire a car. I did AVIS - can't remember which boxes I ticked but more coverage is better.

Driving tip - most of the roads are single lane each way and winding. So don't plan on zooming anywhere (not that you'd really want to anyway).

Used avis.uk for fully inclusive price and didnt need to take out any extras...great price and great service on the Big Island

Also used National(their direct site) in Canada and with all the entertainment book codes and 5 day hire was cheaper than other sites????

Only been to Maui, car hire there is a MUST!
The road to Hana and the crater are 2 of the most popular attractions there.
Don't just rent any car, go for a convertible like Mustang or Camaro to take full advantage of the great weather.
