Hi all

Just looking at my travel profile when going to MEL and thinking about hiring a car instead getting a Hire Car - for a day trip it looks like it might save around $100 per trip. I was just wondering which is the easiest company to hire from? I mean in terms of getting off the aircraft and being in the car as quickly as possible with minimal walking.

Prices are around the same.

I currently have no status with the hire car companies - but that might change.

Much of a muchness at MEL. E car is the furthermost away from QF DOM. Avis include eTags by default -needed in MEL

I have been quoted $60 with Avis for a "standard" size car - seems like a decent price.

Thanks guys.

You may already know but if using Amex with Avis you also get a bonus point on your spend.

Your profile says VA Plat. Can you not claim one of the Complimentary Car Hire companies elite status?

Yes - I am weighing up what the real benefit is. I also wasn't sure if it was permanent.

This next trip is really just an experiment to see how it goes.

Car upgrades - I normally get an Audi no matter what I book with Europcar, Hertz are inconsistant with their Presidents Circle upgrades and have been for four years.

Upgrades are nice but what I guess would be better would be free/discounted rentals.

You get a free weekend with Europcar, thats Friday to Monday, and its easy to organise. Hertz you get a free day with every 20 rentals but it requires a Sat night keep, which is often the same as a 3rd day free promo anyway.

With a rental car you have to park the car. If in Melbourne city that can be expensive.
Also you need to pay a toll on the Tulla motorway (will not uses the term freeway)

Crown is handy for that at $6 last time I used them overnight.
