Has anybody had expereince of renting cars through the QF website?

The prices that come up seem quite good but what I find frustrating is that for overseas rentals it says insurance coverage is available on collection. There seems to be no way of finding out the final cost in advance. I don't like doing business that way.

I guess that the prices are low because there are no CDW or theft protections included?

How do their ultimate prices with CDW and theft protection included stack up?

Have not used Qantas (or any other airline, for that matter), because their prices are no better than you can get booking direct for Australian rentals and for international rentals, their prices are lower because they do not include CDW, TP or Third party liability, with no way to find out the total cost in advance (as you've mentioned).

A couple of things to note:

Hertz offer packaged rates to Aussies that include all insurances, at similar rates to what US residents without any insurance (When Qantas used Hertz, they would always quote the rate exclusive of this, which was lower, but when you add insurance at the counter, much more expensive).

Avis offer Aussies rates including CDW, but they don't include third party liability - this costs an extra amount per day. Without checking, I assume Qantas quotes lower rates excluding any insurance. As with Hertz, I assume these rates would end up being more expensive once insurnace added.

There are many threads on car rental in this forum that you might want to look at for further info.

Thanks. I was really just wanting to get a feel for the Qantas offering. It seemed a little too good to be true but the absence of the insurance cost up front is annoying

I'm Avis Preferred but I don't know whether others have noticed that recently Avis prices seem to have shot up and they can be quite erratic. So I'm just starting to cast around because of that.

I assume your first comment is in regard to overseas and your second comment regarding Avis prices having shot up and being quite erraitic is in relation to Australia.

Car rental prices in Australia have shot up for all companies and have been high and errtic for the last couple of months. For some reason they were abnormally low a couple of months ago, for bookings from staright away to three months in advance. Then they jumped to very high levels. Prices usually drop to their lowest levels in the winter months when demand is lower, so they should drop in May, once the school holidays are over (or possibly June).

Correct assumption and thanks for the other comments. What I noticed was real, then!

I've recently used argus car hire after feedback from AFF members.
3 rentals in USA and, with insurances included, beat the pants off others I compared against including Dollar and Qantas

I have used the QF web site many times.

I generally find it cheaper than the car rental agency's web site.

Recently booked through QF website for Avis pickup in HNL.

Quoted $340.

Avis added over $200 of mandatory extras, so plus fuel, total cost $550. Only received 700 FF pts.

Won't do that again.

Certainly the prices that come up initially look very good compared with going direct to the rental car companies. But how do you find the insurance costs, and therefore the total cost, to be?

It certainly looks good and all inclusive price quoted, with no excess insurance. I think I'll give them a go for an upcoming trip that includes both Europe and the US.

Generaly when you add all of that in the QF site versing car rental people it is generally a few dollars cheaper.

I have rang a Car rental place one and they said it is because QF give them so much business they have a special wholesale rate and QF make a small amount out of every rental.
