Good morning from the UK.
Just interested to know if anybody has any particular recommendations regarding car hire for a month in Tasmania. My wife and I are flying down in the next few weeks, probably into Hobart itself. Thanks.Mike.

Welcome to AFF :)

Nothing to recommend in particular; all the major franchises are here. Avis probably the largest, but Hertz etc no probs. Should be a good time to visit - school hols finished, so less crowded on roads and tourist spots.

Can we offer any help with particular things in Tasmania? A number of AFFers here.

One general tip - it takes longer than you think to drive from A to B. Road quality not as good as you may be used to; many winding kms on highways etc. Never pays to be in a hurry.

Thanks for the quick responses, and the offer of further advice. I'm sure after talking with Mrs T we will have some more questions. We're looking to keep to a reasonable budget and will probably use AirBnb and Homestay .com for accommodation as we travel around unless there are other local alternatives?!
For those interested, we are on Reward tickets courtesy of KLM and SkyTeam. Round trip at present booked, London, Amsterdam, Singapore,Christchurch, Sydney and back to London. Business Class all the way, around 500,000 miles and total taxes around £850 Sterling total.

Hi milkeact,
If renting the car for a month, I would consider catching a taxi into the city depot and renting from there. That way you avoid the airport surcharge which, for a month, could be hefty.

Last time we rented in Tasmania we used Bargaincarrentals (through a third party site called economycarrentals.com ). It cheap enough but comes with a few downsides. The rental place is most of the time out of the airport and you have to wait for a shuttle. Also, they keep quite a bit of money on hold on your credit card for the rental... but in the end its quite ok. Its cheap, never had a problem (rented from them a few times now) and they make it as easy as they can.
One perk with these compared to a few other companies was that they had unlimited mileage and the other ones was restricted.
