I wonder if any member had experience or update about carrying iPad into China for personal use. I will be flying from Sydney to Beijing in May and intend to carry an iPad (old model purchased in August 2010) with me.

There was news a few months ago that China imposed an import duty on iPad irrespective whether for personal use in order to stop smuggling of that popular gadget into China.

As the iPad is now sold there, and a lot are sold, or were sold originally, I think you should be fine.

Wherever you read that my friend it is total cough. No international traveller is ever going to be questioned / sanctioned when entering China with their own personal computers etc - do not give it another thought - go there and enjoy the mountains of fabulous experiences that China / Beijing has to offer.

Dates? Business or pleasure? Which hotel you staying at? If you need some help / advice on Beijing feel free to ask.

China did introduce duty on iPhones and iPads, but to stop people bringing loads in for commercial gain

I think there have been a few reports of visitors being charged "duty" on their iPad but from what I have read it is a case of being scammed by unscrupulous customs officials at some of the more off the track entry points to China.

I have been to Shanghai a couple of times since duty was introduced without any issues and I don't think you'll have any issues flying into Beijing. :)
