So, I am a first time poster and have no idea where this post rightfully belongs.

I am visiting a friend in HK in July and flying CX, because my friend works for them, he is flying to Aus on my return, and I get QF points. Trawling through the QF T&C, it says that you earn 1 point per mile on CX in economy if it's a Y class fare, or you earn 0.5 ppm in the other fare classes. I have wasted a bit of time trying to find out which fare is which class. Does anyone know the answer to this? Or is it a call CX's booking service and hope for the best.

Cheers,

I usually have a quick look at the flights on their website - if it doesn't earn Asiamiles, I don't book it. From memory, you can see the classes that earn in the fine print right before you go into the payment section.

I usually select the flights I'm looking for with "flexible dates" as my option - this gives you a list of prices (the cheapest won't earn you squat), select the first one that earns Asia Miles and then go to the next page. Here is where you can see their earning table - might need that magnifying glass, but it's pretty easy to figure out which flights *not* to take.

Got caught out once when a flight was booked for me - they chose an earning flight on the outbound flight, but a non-earning on the return. Wasn't too happy, so I offered to book the flights myself (to save you time etc, etc) from then on.

Basically, their cheapest flights won't earn, but just about every other one will (full Y will be the most expensive normally) - but do make sure you check the fine print, and if you're still not certain give them a call and they will happily advise you.

If the price paid was at all reasonable then it is almost certainly NOT a Y fare!

Take note also that some of the CX flights sold on the QF website do not earn SCs or QFF points either.

Thanks for the advice. I think I may check out the premium economy fares, and see how they compare and suit my budget.
