Quick question that someone in the know might know... I'm trying to get two J award seats from the USA back to Australia and have left it a bit late so my options are a bit thin.

I can get SFO-HKG arriving at about 5am and then connect to one of the evening HKG-SYD flights (which works ok as we'll get a day to spend in HKG). Connection time in HKG is about 16 hours.

To book it, I'll book on the one ticket as SFO-HKG and then HKG-SYD. Will we be able to check through luggage from SFO-SYD? If not, will CX still allow our USA baggage allowance on the HKG-SYD flight? I generally come back from the States with my full WP 3 x 32kg bags, so even cutting down to the no-cx-status 2 x 32kg will be enough of a struggle, going back to 30kg total would defeat the purpose of going altogether!

Firstly, there would be no problems checking your luggage all the way to SYD.

As for the second part of your query, there is no additional baggage allowance for elites across the oneworld carriers.

You allowance would be the generic CX Business allowance.

Thanks, I knew that. Just wanted to ensure they apply the USA allowance across all flights on the ticket.

I would expect you to get the US allowance. the website says:

Applicable if you are travelling to, from or via the USA, Canada, select Central and South American countries.

I think the OP's point is being missed. He is really asking (as I read it) if he books as two seperate flights will he get the US allowance all the way. In which case the answer would be no. The weight system would apply SYD-HKG and the peice system on the US flight. Now if it was one through booking rather than two seperate flights then I would assume the peice system would apply SYD-SFO.

Actually, I once had two separate CX bookings LAX-HKG, HKG-MEL with a 6 hour layover in between them. On the flight to MEL, the extra US allowance wasn't a problem. Whether this was just a kind gate agent or not, it wasn't a problem for me.

To clarify- It doesnt matter if its 2 separate bookings or 1- even if its a mix of QF or CX (any OW)... as long as the agent checks-in and tags your luggage all the way to the final destination you wont have any issues. The only issue is that you wont have access to or see your luggage until final destination (Sydney).

I actually thought the main question was about checking through (assumed the seconf leg on QF). Since it appears to be all with CX then the US allowance should apply.

This. :)

Get your bags checked in all the way to SYD when you check in at SFO. They should be willing enough and OK by the rules to do this. (It shouldn't matter if it's CX to CX or CX to QF).

Pack 1 or 2 spare changes of clothes with you in your carry-on. You may exit the airport at HKG during your transit if you so desire.

Of course, keep your bag tags handy as you may need to present them again when you re-enter HKG departures for your second flight to Australia.

Thanks. I don't want to see the bags until we get to SYD so checking through is the answer (and seems as though it will solve any problems).

All the flights will be on the one ticket/reservation, however they'll be broken up as a multi-city booking. Ticket will look something like:

Flight 1:
SYD-LAX (QF)

Flight 2:
LAX-SFO (AA)

Flight 3:
SFO-HKG (CX)

Flight 4:
HKG-SYD (CX)

Flights 2, 3 and 4 will be same day connections however I'd like my bags to repack in SFO and then check them all in again and let them go to SYD. My only concern was that CX would have an issue with them being listed as seperate flights but on the one ticket. Seems like I should be safe though.

Same ticket is 100% no problem. Though must admit am surprised to see that separate ticket through checked is also no a problem.
